Dire Straits -- Classic Song Ruled Offensive in Canada

1/13/2011 2:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

26 years after the Dire Straits classic hit "Money for Nothing" first hit the airwaves ... the song has been ruled "too offensive" to be broadcast on Canadian radio ... because of a homophobic lyric.

The issue first arose last year, after someone filed a complaint explaining that the song contained the homophobic F-word ... three different times.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruled that the word is indeed offensive -- and ordered radio stations to use an edited version of the song.

The CBSC explained that societal values have "shifted" since the song debuted ... and "the broadcast of the song in 2010 must reflect those values, rather than those of 1985."

And I have to agree with #28 - Kickster....you are exactly right. They arent calling anyone names in particular nor do they mean harm against anyone really...they are expressing how they were percieved and looked upon. Very sad...why do people have some much time to sit around and worry about stuff that doesn't matter when they should be worrying about more important things in this world!

Canada needs to grow the F-#@& up and grow a pair and the world needs to stop pretending that it is offended by every damn thing.

What a joke! Im ashamed to be from Canada! All it took was one gay guy to phone in and complain about a silly little word and a classic song has to be altered even though its been playing on the air for 25 years? Give me a break! Get with it people...it's 2011 who cares what words are thrown around. People get waaay too offensive when it comes to certain things. Haven't you heard of ingnore it and get over it? How old are we now? Geez

Pathetic, the lyrics are a sarcastic commentary on how inadequate homophobic males refer to other males who are successful as F_____ts because they are jealous of their successes. It is sad that we have become so pathetic as a nation that we can not recognize song as art and understand the need to allow this type of commentary to reflect society.

Oh Helen, how wrong you are. Just because your parents, your TV station and your newspapers says that Canada is loved by the world, does not mean it is true. Canada is full of a-holes... and when they travel, they act like everyone loves them bc they are Canadian. So funny. You are disgusted by Americans yet here you are at an American website, probably sipping on a Coca-Cola while an American show plays on the TV behind you. Believe me, Canada is not loved by the entire world. Travel a little and see...

I laugh at you Americans. You are all so rude and arrogant it's discusting! No wonder the entire world hates your country. You can't say that about us can you? Canada is loved by the world. Perhaps you Americans can learn from your northern neighbour. Treat others like you wish to be treated yourself!

You might want to take a look at some of the other comments and see what some of your fellow countrymen (and women) think about YOUR country. Jealousy ALWAYS brews hatred, my dear!

Classic liberal government overreaction.

They don't give the audience any credit to be able to figure out on their own that he is actually making fun of a guy that he heard speaking like that in a bar.

It's actually an anti-discrimination song, and they don't get it, so they ban it.

This has to stop!! But how?? I don't even like lookin' strangers in the friggin' eye, I'm skeered they would take it offensively!!! How did this get so out of hand? I have a Lesbian neighbor, she's the coolest person, and my mouth keeps spewing out the *** word and she has never had a problem with it because I don't use it in a negative way. I am careful to not use it around ppl I don't know though!! Ppl are too sensitive nowadays, grow some tougher skin!!
