Golden Globes Sued for Fraud

1/13/2011 10:45 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has just been slapped with a lawsuit -- days before the Golden Globes -- by a public relations firm that is claiming they were lied to and given the boot after 17 years of hard work.

Golden Globes Fraud

Cinepoint Productions claims it did publicity work for the Association for 17 years, taking the Golden Globes from irrelevance to prominence.

In fact, Cinepoint claims they did such a good job, the Globes were able to lock in a $26 million annual deal with NBC beginning in 2012  ... up from their previous deal, worth just $12 mil-a-year.

Cinepoint claims in the suit -- filed today in L.A. County Superior Court  -- it was promised when its contract with the Association expired in 2009 it would be renewed, and Cinepoint did a lot of hard work relying on the promise ... a promise it says was not honored.

Of course, it's Hollywood, and Cinepoint was unceremoniously kicked to the curb -- the contract was not renewed.

Cinepoint is suing for the fees it would have earned, $2 million, plus punitive damages.

UPDATE: A rep for the Golden Globes says the allegations are without merit ... and claims it's just a "case of a disgruntled former consulting firm, whose contract was not renewed."

Another unhappy service firm that has retained the services of just one of the thousands of ambulance chaser attorneys who is trying to establish a contract between the parties based on "reliance/promise", that Cinepoint claims it relied on. The contract was not extended, and it does not matter how much Cinepoint claims it "helped"; this sounds like a divorce attorney's claim that "she" devoted her life to him, and gave up other opportunities that would have benefited her, for him. There is an easy fix for companies such as this - black ball them and put them oput of business.

Maybe is they still had a decent public relations company somebody could have warned them about becoming laughingstocks for nominating The Tourist and Jolie and Depp for best actor/actress in it.

and? who cares? no.. I mean seriously who cares????

HFP is a joke and this lawsuit affirms the fact that everyone in Hollywood who cares are a bunch of losers with no lives.

Everyone in town knows the HFP are on the take but they all have the brains of cats so who cares.

When you have The Tourist and Burlesque and True Grit out it doesn't say much about what this awards show is about...which is about Brangelina and Aguilera's cleavage so all the creepy German writers can get off!

Think about it, this show is about the foreign press voting for awards. This company built the show up to have some prestige. Good for them for the lawsuit! The show is still a joke.

The Golden Globes are a joke. They nominated Angelina Jolie for best actress in a comedy or musical for 'The Tourist'. I mean, I don't think the producers meant for it to be a comedy, at least on purpose.

The payola charges don't surprise me, but as anyone in the business can tell you (secretly) the Golden Globes is all about publicity and nothing else.

If Cinepoint did the work for the Globes based on a promised renewed contract, then the GG need to pay them off for the work they did. GG doesn't have to renew the contract if they don't want to, but they do have to pay for services rendered. You don't get your hair cut with the promise that you'll come back and have it cut again the next time you need it and walk out not paying for the present cut. That's theft of service.

I'm quite amazed by this story!!! NOT! However, it does make u wonder and doubt all award shows. If this former publicist wins this lawsuit, will other award show producers get threaten with a lawsuit by their former publicist in the future?

Please read my article on Diversity News Magazine vs Golden Globes Awards/Hollywood Foreign Press Association publicist After Legal Battles and Controversy And the Winners are of The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2012

With so much legal battles and controversial news been reporting last year about the Golden Globe Awards by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and air by NBC Universal, the 69th Annual Golden Globe were finally held on Sunday, January 15, 2012 live from from The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA and hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais.
Before we present you the winners list read the some of the legal controversy of The Golden Globe Awards/Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Michael Russell says his employer of 17 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and its awards are tainted by fraud and corrupt practices. According to The Wrap, the suit seeks $2 million in damages and alleges the stager of the Golden Globes is guilty of:
Accepting money, vacations, and gifts from studios in exchange for nominating their films.
Selling media credentials and red carpet space for profit.
Accepting payment from studios and producers for lobbying other members for awards nominations.
{And] consistently directed Russell to bury stories in the press regarding HFPA’s unethical practices.

Hollywood Foreign Press Suffers Setback in Publicist Lawsuit
Editor’s Note: We tried to communicate to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association publicist firm Sunshine, Sachs & Associates about the controversial and legal battle of their client and we did not wanted to get involved in anything like this but we tried to support and promote their event and they did not care. They did not even notify us if we were denied or approved to cover the awards show.
So to make this short this is our last coverage and post on Sunshine, Sachs & Associates clients. Also we want to add that Michael Samonte, publicist from Sunshine, Sachs & Associates acknowledged about the controversy in an email and phone conversation back on December 12, 2011 with our editor in-chief Esteban “Steven” Escobar and he told him that they were not the same PR firm. Which he means they are not The Lippin Group, but the funny thing is that he came from The Lippin Group and he even brought some of his colleagues to work with Sunshine, Sachs & Associates. To prove to us that they were not like The Lippin Group Michael agreed to approve us to cover the announcement of the 69th Annual Golden Globe® Awards nominations. The reality of all this is the here at Diversity News Magazine published by Diversity News Publications we feel discriminated by the Golden Globes Awards/Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Sunshine, Sachs & Associates.
Dear the Hollywood Foreign Press Association you need to hire a public relations firm the creates and cares about your image, reputation and relationship with others. Want to talk to us, contact we are easy to deal with. We want to congratulate all the winners and nominees for outstanding recognition.Thank you.
