Jared Lee Loughner -- 'I'm in a Terrible Place'

I actually know a little about mental health issues - ex hubby was nuts. There is virtually little anyone can do to get help for someone who doesn't want it. After all, the mentally ill have 'rights' too. So until they do something really bad, the law will not help you help them. As for income, there is free mental health care everywhere. Free state hospitals and free medicine. The catch is mentally ill people don't think anything is wrong with them and won't take their meds. What amazes me is that there isn't more of this stuff going on.

because he is clearly insane , he will NEVER get the death penalty. What a tragedy there is no denying that but that being said he is clearly insane there is to much evidence over the years that he is insane. Its sad but he will be in a mental hospital not jail

Agree with John he wont get the death penalty any more than Ted Kaczinski (Unabomer) didnt get the death penalty cause he was schizophrenic. As far as regreting he doesnt get the death penalty after you admitted you believe he is insane is a bit disturbing though. Reguardless he will spend every last day of his life in a hopsital (like Hinkley did for shooting at Reagen) or he will spend it in segregation locked up 23 out of 24 hours a day. Personally I would be begging for the death penalty if that is how I had to live out the rest of my life. Its a sad day in America when we allow the acts of crazy people to compromise the humanity of sane people. Either way he is gone forever and death penalty is a more expensive process than life without (appealate process is different, more expensive, and prolonged) and the staffing of death row is nearly 10 times the cost.

There were so many folks who knew of this young man's mental instability. I'm sure his family was concerned as well, but our medical system just doesn't have enough resources to deal with these kind of folks, until they commit some heinous act. So often you can see mentally unbalanced people walking the streets, many of whom can be harmless, but how does one filter out the folks who might be ticking time bombs? I'm sure many folks just thought of him as a raving "harmless" lunatic, but he proved to be so much more. How do we address this issue, which seems to be more common than we wish to think it is? There must be some type of legislation that could be put into place.
