Ricky Gervais and De Niro

'Golden' Controversies

1/17/2011 11:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Ricky Gervais and Robert De Niro both talked their way into a firestorm at the "Golden Globes" last night ... after each attempted risky jokes that some consider downright offensive.

Gervais' dig came while commenting on the movie, "I Love You Phillip Morris" -- when he said, "Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – which is the exact opposite of some famous Scientologists ... probably." Gervais added, "My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

A short time later, De Niro left jaws hanging while thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press for his lifetime achievement award ... saying, "I'm sorry more members of the foreign press aren't with us tonight, but many were deported right before the show along with most of the waiters. And Javier Bardem."

So we gotta ask ...

I thought both were funny... relax Hollywood... what you can't take a joke. Robn Williams, Eddie Murphy, all stand up comedians make fun of all races, and sexual preferences... I mean if you can't laugh at yourself... then WTF... I would have loved to have been there and him rip into me.... It's just jokes.... RELAX !!!

I thought Gervais was great. He made what tends to be a stuffy formal event much more fun.

DeNiro isn't a comedian, and wasn't in an MC psition. His remarks seemed out of place for the honor he was receiving.

Those giant egos all need to be taken down a peg. So what, they get insulted? They're still going to live a life average Joe's will NEVER have. They need to get over themselves.

It's never a good idea to offend the people who hire you! The HFPA is dependent upon celebrity patronage of their awards show in order to get sponsors to pay for its production. 2010 wasn't a good year for many celebrities and they didn't appreciate being reminded of their personal issues and less than stellar box office receipts. Robert Downey, Jr. tried throwing Mr. Gervais a "hint" and he disregarded it. Publicly airing his displeasure with Steve Carell's decision to leave "The Office" was tacky. The toes Mr. Gervais stepped on are attached to the "same azzes he may have to kiss" in order to remain successful in Hollywood. It doesn't take a "rocket scientist" to figure that out!!!

Law abiding American

That was one of the best shows, usually they are boring and kiss ass type, Gervis and DeNiro were both fab. I guess the truth hurts. There was nothing offensive about either u see Gervis was being funny and he was and DeNiro was being funny and truthful which he was. So Hollywood get over urself and join the real world u bunch of spoiled brats

De Niro can say whatever he likes, Gervais is a nobody, so he can't. De Niro can and Gervais can't. simple like that

Gervais's comedy is basically offensive, that's his hook. But he just went waaaaaay too far over the line last night. AND from what I am hearing, he probably just increased his fan base because of it. He was just too much for prime time television.

And De Niro, fire your effing writers! I really thought there would be something more genuine coming out of your mouth. Imagine if this were on HBO...WOW, now that would be a show...

So far this year, the awards shows have all sucked. None have done well. Queen Latifah should go into hiding after the Peoples Choice Awards...The Globes...It was a crappy show altogether. Fire the fricking writers and who ever else was in charge...Blah!!

The saving grace last night for me was to see the classiest act of all, Michael Douglas. That was really awesome!

De Niro, was probably trying to toss back some of those jokes that have been tossed at him through the years. Is De Niro married??? I think so...Hmmmmm....Sometime you give as good as you get..Do not make it right though..

I kept watching because of Ricky Gervais. Hilarious that he took the p iss out of the self-proclaimed elite. He didn't say a thing that isn't public knowledge.

I am in agreement with the majority of you on here. It is okay for celebrities to say anything they want about anyone or any topic they want, however as soon as it turns in their direction they are all offended. It is called life and sometimes it just sucks!
