Ricky Gervais and De Niro

'Golden' Controversies

1/17/2011 11:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Ricky Gervais and Robert De Niro both talked their way into a firestorm at the "Golden Globes" last night ... after each attempted risky jokes that some consider downright offensive.

Gervais' dig came while commenting on the movie, "I Love You Phillip Morris" -- when he said, "Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – which is the exact opposite of some famous Scientologists ... probably." Gervais added, "My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

A short time later, De Niro left jaws hanging while thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press for his lifetime achievement award ... saying, "I'm sorry more members of the foreign press aren't with us tonight, but many were deported right before the show along with most of the waiters. And Javier Bardem."

So we gotta ask ...

They were honest. So what's the big deal. When Gervais made the gay joke everyone gasped because 1.) They all knew who he was talking about and 2.) He actually said it out loud. Big deal.
Deniero was also right. Everyone in that kitchen waiting on these phoneys are all from somewhere else and most are illegals. That is true for almost every big event, and restraunt in America.

Stop acting so schocked and insulted- Its the truth- deal with it.

Why is there no option for "not offensive"?

Why does everything have to be so PC these days? Can't anyone take a joke and stop taking everything so seriously?

Neither! I guess the show must have been really boring for TMZ to get so cranked about this. People in the Congress are far worse.

Di Nero must have lost a maid or yardman recently, so sad. With his current record of piss ant movies, looks like he's now "acting" for the money and not the art.

Gervais was working under the classic comedy tradition known as a "roast". The jokes are meant to be a bit mean. And these types of jokes rely on the butt of such jibes to take it well.

And DeNiro was making a satirical comment on the deportation issues in this country.

TMZ should be ashamed of themselves for taking things so out of context and offering such a heavily biased and deliberately inflammatory choice of "which one was more offensive."

Neither. You gossip mongers should be deported.

The scientology "joke" was sickening. This perpetuates a hurtful false rumor that has continued to float around. Not, unlike the "Rod Stewart" rumor in the 70's and 80's. (supposedly what they found in Rod's stomach after he passed out on stage) Just because someone doesn't father any children doesn't make him gay, not that there is anything wrong with it , if he were. I see it that the person in questioned was married to an older woman, who probaly couldn't use birth control pills, blood clots, etc. So, this young man gets a vascectomy. He then marries a second time. After ten years of marriage and adopting needy children, this woman some how has a "miracle" child. (I'm going to guess it has something to do with a certain obnoxious Australian action star that broke up another famous Hollywood marriage) He leaves her, for obvious reasons. With the third wife, he now has the proceedure reversed (microsurgery has come a long way in 20 years). They have a child that obviouly looks very much like her father. Story closed.

Whatever

Who cares? Joke is a joke. Political correctness offends me, content of this site offends me, pictures that you post offends me.
Btw, your admins should learn how to format pages properly.

slapstick humor (american) and irony/sarcasm/self deprecating humour (uk) are different. Depends what you like. Ricky Gervais is sharp but the likes of Tom Hanks can quite easily provide equally humorous retorts

neither was offensive, it's comedy ... if you can't laugh at yourself, a friend of a stranger then what's life coming to

I do not think any of these lead male actors are homo's, but if you have a problem with the joke, that's pretty gay.
