Ricky Gervais and De Niro

'Golden' Controversies

1/17/2011 11:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Ricky Gervais and Robert De Niro both talked their way into a firestorm at the "Golden Globes" last night ... after each attempted risky jokes that some consider downright offensive.

Gervais' dig came while commenting on the movie, "I Love You Phillip Morris" -- when he said, "Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – which is the exact opposite of some famous Scientologists ... probably." Gervais added, "My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

A short time later, De Niro left jaws hanging while thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press for his lifetime achievement award ... saying, "I'm sorry more members of the foreign press aren't with us tonight, but many were deported right before the show along with most of the waiters. And Javier Bardem."

So we gotta ask ...

NO one was offended. Nice Try TMZ. You are getting really ridiculous at trying to stir up controversy.

Gervais was a breath of fresh air in that pompous, hot-air environment. These people are only actors - they're paid to be phonies. Why should they be put on pedestals and everyone is like "Oooooh! Ouch!" Nah. Each of Gervais' comments/jokes was spot on.

And why should Willis be offended by the comment? More like a zinger at Demi Moore, and she deserves it. Talk about mutton dressed as lamb.

And the gay references that everyone knows about? Hey, after Wikileaks, does anyone in the world think they're too special to be opened up to public scrutiny? Are there special rules for phonies? And actually - doubly phony phonies? Actors acting straight. Love it.

Gervais is AWESOME. He doesn't have to worry. He's making money hand over fist. And we all know that the entertainment industry are wh*re$. If anyone can make a buck working with Gervais, they'll be all over him like a cheap suit.

A little bit edgy, but who cares. Like the joke, or don't like the joke. Stop being so sensitive everyone.

Typical self-centered, narcissitic, "live in a bubble" Hollywood actors. Most of them are ignorant babblers without a script.

What I found most offensive is what he said when he introduced Sandra Bullock - about not taking public transportation - you could tell she wanted to say something but bit her tongue.

I wouldn't be watching if it weren't for Ricky Gervais. Brings out the true nature of Hollywood ie: Steve Carell can't take a joke and neither can Tim Allen.
All fluff no substance.

Where's the button for "Not at all offensive"

Neither of them were offensive. They were both making jokes about everybody. Just because one of their jokes was about gay people and the other was about foreign people...come on! You can't pick and choose like that. You make jokes about one you can make one about all. And if you take offense, that is your own insecurities speaking.

BOTH were HILARIOUS! At times the show got boring, but I couldn't wait till Ricky got back up there, I was hanging on to every word.

Neither one of those jokes was offensive. When will TMZ put a "Neither" button?

Ricky Gervais stole that joke about John Travolta from Rob Schneider at the Quinten Tarantino roast, a few months ago.

Preserve the Tiger

You can tell there were actors and actresses in the audience because they laughed at something that was insulting rather than humorous; they've trained themselves to act spontaneously rather than responsibly! Everyone should have gotten up and left; to heck with the materialistic award trophy! People should put more emphasis on morality, and doing the right thing, rather than accepting an award at a show where the Host and recipients (some of them) are more shallow than a drop of water in a bucket.

I no longer have television because I couldn't see paying money for crap, which is 99.9999% of what's on the tube these days! I respect those who have earned it; and according to what happened last night, there were only a few actors/actresses who earned that respect!

As long as you support this heartless spewing-off-at-the-mouth, you are going to be subjected to crap, and mindless people who could care less about another person's feelings. Shame on all of you who continued to participate in that shameless event after those comments ~ insults were made!

Ricky & Robert slammed homosexuals, foreigners, a religion ... when are they going to be tortured like Mel has been? Two wrongs don't make a right, but there's nothing right about what those two (Ricky & Robert) said and did! When are the protests to have their careers destroyed going to begin? When are the protests to have their lives ended going to begin? When are the comments, "They deserve to die!" going to be made. When are the things that have been done to Mel going to be done to them? It shouldn't, and neither should Mel be continually prosecuted for his mistakes! Mel made those comments in what was to be a private conversation; however, the conversations were recorded illegally. Ricky & Robert made those comments publicly and you sat there and laughed! You condoned the ignorance and insensitivity!

I continue to support Mel Gibson! These a-holes NOT!

Don Alex

DeNiro jumped the shark long ago, and his latest Fockers fiasco is further proof that the person who created Bickle and LaMotta onscreen died at about the same time that he showed up to present an Oscar award to someone else while wearing his "Fearless Leader" haircut from the infamous "Rocky and Bullwinkle". So Im not surprised he would say something that dumb. I wonder how he would feel if another actor made tasteless "jokes" about his fondness for black women. However, in Gervais defense, he wasnt putting down being gay, he was making reference to the belief by many that John Travolta and Tom Cruise are gay and hiding in the Scientology closet. I dont find that one offensive at all. But DeNiro ... what a flake.
