Ricky Gervais and De Niro

'Golden' Controversies

1/17/2011 11:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Ricky Gervais and Robert De Niro both talked their way into a firestorm at the "Golden Globes" last night ... after each attempted risky jokes that some consider downright offensive.

Gervais' dig came while commenting on the movie, "I Love You Phillip Morris" -- when he said, "Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – which is the exact opposite of some famous Scientologists ... probably." Gervais added, "My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

A short time later, De Niro left jaws hanging while thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press for his lifetime achievement award ... saying, "I'm sorry more members of the foreign press aren't with us tonight, but many were deported right before the show along with most of the waiters. And Javier Bardem."

So we gotta ask ...

Well said, Aquanet (18). I love how Johnny Depp and Jolie were pouting, too. People fawn over those two WAY too much, well, we fawn over celebrities way too much in general. Gervais and DeNiro were spot on. And I agree with DirtySouth that he was more sarcastic about the condition of illegal immigration conversation, etc than anything else...Hollywood needs to lighten up!

Ever notice that "humor" is making fun of someone or something. As such, someone is going to be "offended".

Ever notice that the person being offended always blames someone else for their being so and accepts no responsibility for their experience.

Ever notice why there's little humor in Japan? They won't "offend" you. They might kill you, but they won't "offend" you.

Astounding, isn't it?

Another vote for "neither." Can't anyone tell a joke anymore without being harangued by some oversensitive member of the group at the butt of it?

Neither were offensive and THAT should be an option. I am sure TMZ would be the first to post on the events that both joked about, but let them make light of the events in joke form and here come the media hacks looking for their next story. Get over yourselves and that goes for the Hollywood types that were offended by the jokes. Lighten up, Francis.

More people are talking about Ricky Gervais and Robert De Niro than who won awards. I think that Gervais made the show bearable and the actors need to get over themselves.

Why don't you put a catagory for NOT OFFENSIVE AT ALL? Neither was offensive. I think all the gays at TMZ should get a thicker skin.

Exactly why the world turns this crap off fifteen minutes in. There once was a time that talented comedians got huge laughs without diving to the bottom of the cesspool. Today the mainstream is so talentless that pushing far past the boundaries of decency is "hip" and shock is the only way to get a nervous giggle.

No surprises here. Hollywad picked this dunce for an MC and DeNero is like most of the rest...on one hand he wants to push the bar farther into the gutter and one the other be PC to the core. I'd call that two faced except there are more faces to the shill than just two.

Gervais: scientology so controlled my sisters mind that when she contracted uterine cancer (which doctors later said could have been removed, and she would have been fine) she relied on their "magical waters" rather than seeing a doctor. she subsequently died, and throughout that long ordeal I never met one scientologist that ever told the truth, or cared about anything but her money. right-on Ricky. *note: they are very good at brain-washing, be careful.

I never understood the big draw of Ricky Gevais. American pop culture seems enamored with offensive Brits these days from Simon Cowell, that Brandt guy, and such. Reality shows are littered with them.

Get A Life

I think some of the responders above need to get a life and realize the reasons for these Awards shows (and the hosts THEY choose). Ricky Gervais was up there for one reason so get over it. All the BS philisophical analysis about homosexuality, marriages, and Scientology overshadows the actual awards for hard working actresses like Melissa Leo from The Fighter (just one example).
