Ricky Gervais and De Niro

'Golden' Controversies

1/17/2011 11:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Ricky Gervais and Robert De Niro both talked their way into a firestorm at the "Golden Globes" last night ... after each attempted risky jokes that some consider downright offensive.

Gervais' dig came while commenting on the movie, "I Love You Phillip Morris" -- when he said, "Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – which is the exact opposite of some famous Scientologists ... probably." Gervais added, "My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

A short time later, De Niro left jaws hanging while thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press for his lifetime achievement award ... saying, "I'm sorry more members of the foreign press aren't with us tonight, but many were deported right before the show along with most of the waiters. And Javier Bardem."

So we gotta ask ...

lighten up

Are you kidding...lighten up folks. Why is it offensive if the practice of being gay is fine? Also, where's our loyalty with US citz or those of other countries?

This has been going on for years now, regardless the MC at an awards show. The press has to do these grand stories on how offensive the jokes were, or how some actors feelings got hurt. COME ON PEOPLE ! It's a publicity ploy. We're all reading and watching these stories, and we all know that we wouldn't give the time of day to a general story about any of these boring awards shows.

They're called jokes for a reason; they're not to be taken seriously. Lighten up. Granted there are bad jokes but they are for entertainment...period. Must be a slow news day.

If you think Ricky Gervais was offensive last night you should try watching Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr videos on youtube. Gives a whole new meaning to the word. I think they are all fantastic btw.

Good call, Ricky, consulting the lawyers. Tom Cruise likes to sue over that stuff.

NEIHER offended me...I loved all the jokes in the awards show. They added humor to the otherwise traditional (present video, announce winner and winner thank yous) Golden Globe show format. I laughed at EVERY Ricky, Robert (Downey) and Bob (DeNiro) and appreciated joke and hope that Ricky will be back soon.
