Ricky Gervais and De Niro

'Golden' Controversies

1/17/2011 11:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Ricky Gervais and Robert De Niro both talked their way into a firestorm at the "Golden Globes" last night ... after each attempted risky jokes that some consider downright offensive.

Gervais' dig came while commenting on the movie, "I Love You Phillip Morris" -- when he said, "Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – which is the exact opposite of some famous Scientologists ... probably." Gervais added, "My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

A short time later, De Niro left jaws hanging while thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press for his lifetime achievement award ... saying, "I'm sorry more members of the foreign press aren't with us tonight, but many were deported right before the show along with most of the waiters. And Javier Bardem."

So we gotta ask ...

Big FAIL on your little poll there. Should be the option of NEITHER. DeNiro was trying to be funny and he just came off as dorky. Gervais was brilliant and fearless. The Globes have never been this honest or interesting. HFPA is lame, and for the first time in a long time, Downey Jr. is too.

I refuse to take this poll. Give us a third option.Neither! These are jokes. I love these stars. They want all the attention and publicity, but gripe about paparazzi. They love the Academy Awards because it's all so dignified. They need to get a grip. If you were concerned Ricky Gervais would be trending offensive, you haven't paid attention to Ricky. He takes shots at people. Get over it.

it took another year for everyone to realize that Ricky Gervais is a no talent idiot!!Last night's "performance" topped last year's as one of the worst displays of hosting any show in history...

Oh come one, they were both pretty funny jokes, no one would have even questioned this five years ago. What happened to freedom of speech. Everyone is so worried they will offend someone.

I had the 3rd comment on this story, and it was removed!

All it said was, "where's the neither option". I'm glad to see that most of the comments reflect what I earlier stated!

That's what you get with Gervais. At least, he has the balls to say it to their faces! Who else in hollywood would slam Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, while standing 15ft away from them?

How is Ricky Gervais' joke offensive? Unless you're Tom Cruise it shouldn't hurt your feelings at all. Everyone needs to stop choosing to be offended on behalf of these celebrities you've never met and who would probably not give two squirts about your day to day life.

I think DeNIro was actually trying to point out the absurdity of the whole imigration controversy but the joke just fell flat. People in Hollywood are notoriously thin skinned and often times too full of themselves so they are ripe for skewering but some of Gervais' stuff was a bit over the line.

I was so ashamed to watch Ricky Gervais yesterday... All the trashy "comedians" who nobody wants in their country or nobody would take them in their countries, they have a celebrity status in the USA. We love trash. We love bulling another human being, we love the F*** and other insults. That's make us laugh.

It's really shocking the lack of class we have.

If the comments were about Sara Palin, or a joke about her baby with down syndrome, then the Celebs would have beene laughing. If the jokes were about Bush with Monkey ears, then the Celebs would be laughing. If the jokes are about US/Obama's bad policies, then it would have been done in bad taste. If the jokes were about how fat Michelle Obama is, then that would be raciest. If the jokes were about Bristil Palin's weight, then it would been funny to the Celebs.

Ricky was invited to host because he is Ricky. The HFP knew he would get up to something.. there were no surprises Honestly if these A listers cannot laugh at themselves then should not be in the public eye. At least the Brits can take a joke.

Exactly! NOT AT ALL OFFENSIVE! TMZ, YOU'VE GOT TO GIVE A 3RD OPTION FOR YOUR POLLS.

Neither one of them was offensive, in fact they were great. The social commentaries were terrific and best ever. Hollywierdos need to GET OVER themselves!

It's so retarded that anyone would be offended by this. It's COMEDY. Don't like it? Don't watch the show.

TMZ, WHEN will you add 'neither' to your polls? I've been begging you for a year now! As for the poll, Which was more Offensive, my answer is NEITHER!!! Both were funny and if people can't take a JOKE anymore, that's their problem. This world is overly PC, and THAT'S what I find to be offensive!!!

I didn't think either of those was very funny or offensive...it probably explains why I never watch any of these idiotic award shows.
