The Travoltas -- Puppy Love in the Wake of Tragedy

1/19/2011 4:15 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

John Travolta and Kelly Preston have two furry and freakin' adorable new family members -- a pair of puppies they got a few months after the family tragically lost two other dogs in a freak accident.

Travolta Dogs

Kelly and daughter Ella Blue picked up male and female Goldendoodles -- Audi and Charlie -- in September of last year.

We're told the Travoltas spent an extra $2,200 to send the litter mates to four weeks of boot camp -- where they learned basic commands ... and the most awesome ability to ring a bell when they need to go potty.

Puppies rule!

I feel sorry for the little girl. I'm sure that a lot of time had to be devoted to her older brother (as it should be). Now thebig deal is the new baby. Yes, the dogs are replacements, but they look like a pacifier for the little girl. Sad sad story, I think.

I had one dog in my life that was a purebred from a very reputable breeder. Both of this dog's parents were champions in the showring. We never showed our dog, nor did we waste the money to train him, we had the sense to walk him a couple of times a day without him having to 'ring a bell' and we loved him very much even though he didn't know any tricks. Because he was a purebred though, he had health problems all through life (purebreds don't have the immune systems 'mutts' do because they are sheltered from the 'average ordinary dog' that you'd find at the pound). After our purebred passed away from old age, I had cats from then on. Not one of them was a purebred and every one of them was either a stray, the kitten of a stray (that had hung around our house)and my current two cats are both rescue animals from the pound that were abandoned because they weren't wanted. They may not be 'purebreds' or ring a bell when they are hungry, but their personalities are fabulous and they I wouldn't trade them for all the purebreds in the world. The other posters are right. Go to the shelter or SPCA if you want a wonderful pet. I'd be lost without my two cats.

Dear curiious,
I think it's so sad and evil to attack this family for adopting these hybrid allergy free dogs. My gosh, what's the big deal.
This family has experienced loss at levels that most of these hateful people are saying nasty and evil things too!!!!
Leave them alone- they have the right to enjoy any and all blessings that God brings them!
Quit saying that their daughter is being fulfilled by a pacifier! You are evil! This family is precious

They have rescued shelter dogs and adopted these allergy friendly dogs as well!!!!!

Anyone sitting in judgement of this family is so evil.

We trained our chihuahua to ring a bell 13 years ago. I could have saved them all that money and told them what to do.

The Travolta baby was born in November, and yes she was really pregnant. A little research and ya'll would know. I personally know the person who took the photos of them with their new puppies. These were photos that were taken by TMZ and watermarked as if they owned them! This apparently is a common practice of theirs, It has happened before. And this "Boot camp" program is just a jumpstart for the puppies much like Pre-School is for children, making judgements without knowing anything about this is tacky! TY

I think those dogs are too cute. Not everyone wants to rescue a dog because you don't know what problems they had, especially if you have little kids in the house. You should be mad at the person who abandoned their dogs. Their little girl is the perfect age to take care of those dogs and give them a lot attention.

We adopted a golden doodle, got the opportunity to visit the wonderful farm where our golden doodle was born. IT was NOT a puppy mill. We have also supported shelters as well. I do not think anyone should pass judgement on someone for wanting an allergy friendly pet.....adoption vs a shelter
Whose business is it or who believes they have the right to bring up someones loss of a child, then rant on them for adopting a golden doodle. Seriously, that is so extremely wrong to actually attack a family who has lost their son. This is the most judgmental attack I have ever seen over a family simply adopting pets!!!! Seriously, I pray people really realize how ridiculous it is to accuse a family of replacing a lost child, pacifying their daughter so she can deal with a new baby brother!!!! AND accusing them of supporting a puppy mill! That is so absurd! How can anyone actually think they are justified to attack someone for simply enjoying their life.
Just as much as you have the God given right to free speech, although you have used it in an abusive, attacking way, the Travoltas have the freedom to simply CHOOSE to adopt a golden doodle and believe it or not, it's none of your business. Please spend your time more wisely. Go study about the injustice of human trafficking and use your energy for supporting a real cause. Please quit attacking an innocent family trying to live a life in spite of losing their son!!!

They didn't ADOPT these dogs. They BOUGHT them. When you adopt a dog you are giving an unwanted dog that has no other chance a home. When you BUY a puppy that's been specifically brought into this world to be sold as a consumer product, you are only taking potential homes away from adoptable dogs, and you are increasing the demand for purposely bred mixed breed dogs.

There is a difference between adoption and buying something like shopping. The Travoltas did not adopt these puppies. They bought them. And for two grand each. Now that people see that the Travoltas are buying a two thousand dollar dog and see pictures of them, they get worldwide exposure that several gullible public consumers might not have gotten otherwise and will run off to get themselves a "Travolta puppy" too.

The power of influence has an effect on the bigger picture. Obama bought a rare breed of dog albeit a purebreed, still they bought a rare breed of dog rather than adopted one. They bought a Portuguese Water Dog and since they've bought that dog and the world wide public saw it all over the media, that breed of dog that hardly no one ever sought out to buy, jumped in popularity so high so quickly there are now over 200% more breeders of them pumping out puppies right and left just capitolizing on the FAD. The number of these dogs being bought skyrocketed. And people bought them ONLY because of the Obamas. It was a statis symbol. And when people realized it wasn't the best pet, they got rid of them. The pounds were loaded with unwanted ones. Then you have all the backyard kennel breeders that breed cheap poorly bred ones because reputable breeders wont sell to them and they just gotta get some breeding stock. So you have the majority of them breed not by experts on the breed but every Tom, ****, and Harry with a dog lot to stick them in. They breed them too bog, too small, the wrong coat, unhealthy, temporment problems. They do it for the money they can make by filling supply and demand. Now there are rescues filled, pounds loaded, hundreds of them being put down for health and temporment problems, and just being unwanted in pounds all over the country. All because the Obamas decided to PUBLICALLY buy a pet. Monkey see monkey do.

The Travoltas did the same thing. Now they've added to the craze. And on top of buying a mutt they could have encouraged others to seek a rescue and adopt a Golden Doodle. And there ARE rescues all over the country even the world that do have these dogs. And as people said, it's hard to locate one sometimes. For your average family it may be a little more effort needed on their part to travel a distance or do some internet searching to locate exactly what they want. But for a wealthy celebrity couple who can literally fly anywhere at the drop of a hat, they could have EASILY located and found a rescue that had all the Goldendoodles they could ever want. They just took the spoiled rick way out, and they added to a fad. It was a stupid thing to do. Not a smart thing. And when you are in a position like the Travoltas or even the Obamas you need to act accordingly and understand that you unfortunately do have a wider power of influence with the impressionable public. Call it a price of fame if you will. But there comes certain responsibilities with that type of public life. That's just how it is. And their actions have caused and will cause even more trouble in the long run for this breed of dog.

P.S. I see TMZ removed the link from their site to the breeder. I can't help thinking it could have been dog lover Harvey or (Charles who owns a similar breed himself). Smart move.

How cute - I am considering getting one of these dogs. What a good idea for boot camp - guess I will look to see if there is one in my area.

This family has lost a child and pet. They may not be perfect but let them choose whatever kind of dog they want. The ignorance of these posts is amazing.

To Judgers and Evil hating persons!
This is so evil to judge and attack a family who has experienced loss at a level that most persons will never understand! I know for a fact that the Travoltas have adopted dogs from a shelter and stlll have them! They have the right to adopt hybrid allergy free pets......my gosh, why assume and attack a precious little girl and dare say she is being given a pacifier and her parents love a new baby more!

We have adopted a goldendoodle for allergy purposes and its been a wonderful experience.....there is nothing wrong with adopting pets!

this is NOT a political issue! This is a precious family who wanted a goldendoodle.....whats so wrong with this? Who chose all you verbal abusive persons to say what the Travoltas can or cannot do?

You should be ashamed for attacking them and comparing anything to the loss of their child and or replacements for their son! Thats evil!

I know for a fact they have adopted dogs from shelters as welll....the wonderful Travoltas have adopted a hybrid breed BECAUSE of allergies!!!!! We did the same.
I am so disgusted to see the verbal attacks on this family and it's so upsetting that while the Travoltas are being blessed with a new baby that people would attack them over adopting a hybrid bred goldebdoodle!!!! They have the right to adopt an allergy friendly family pets! People quit attacking others. It's so wrong!

To posters # 73 and #74.

They did not ADOPT these dogs. They BOUGHT them. The money they spent BUYING them could have ADOPTED ten homeless dogs.

If they wanted mutts, they had every right to own one. That's NOT what people are complaining about. It's that they went out of their way to BUY a designer dog breed INSTEAD of ADOPTING one that needed a home. You can ADOPT Goldendoodles from rescues. Please stop calling it ADOPTION when attacking other posters because you are wrong.

If you want to attack posters for accusing them of replacing their kids or pets. Or being evil people, that's one thing. But when you make your whole argument about them adopting a mixed breed and defending them for it....you are wrong. They didn't adopt a dog in need. They added to the already over grown pet population by buying expensive mutts from breeders only in it for a profit. They didn't adopt a dog. When you buy a dog bred for consumer sale, that's not adoption. It's the opposite of it.

In fact people are complaining because the Travoltas SHOULD HAVE ADOPTED.
