'American Idol' -- The Cowboy Deception

2/3/2011 11:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

John Wayne is not who he appears to be ... at least, he's not the innocent, never-left-the-ranch, amateur singer he was made out to be on last night's "American Idol."

0203_john_wayne_shulz_BN

Turns out, 23-year-old John Wayne Schulz has a pretty impressive past in the music world -- a past "Idol" producers conveniently neglected to mention when they painted him as an "aww shucks" wannabe who finally stumbled off the family ranch for the first time in his life to try out for the show.

JW not only released an album by the time he was 14 years old -- one of his songs was considered for 7 Grammy nominations!!!!

The CEO of John Wayne's old record label tells Billboard.com John only recorded that one album -- explaining, "He's of Mormon faith, and he had to go on his church mission. He was gone for two years, and we just weren't able to reconnect once he returned."

020311_american_idol_video_2Apparently, it's easier to connect with the folks over at "A.I."

HE SUCKS FIRST OF ALL. TONS OF COUNTRY WANNABE SINGERS DO LIKE THAT. IT'S NOT AMAZING. HE SHOWED NO RANGE OR EMOTIONS, STIFF AS A BOARD. YAAAWN!! TMZ, IDOL CHANGED THEIR RULES A COUPLA YEARS BACK. AS LONG AS U DONT HAVE A CURRENT RECORDING CONTRACT AND HAVE NOT RELEASED AN ALBUM OVER A CERTAIN PERIOD, U QUALIFY.

BESIDES, I RECALL LISTENING TO THE RADIO ABOUT 9-10YRS AGO AND THEY PLAYED SOMEONE'S SONG WITH THE NAME JOHN WAYNE. THE DJ'S KEPT SAYING HIS NAME IS EASIER TO REMEMBER CUZ IT WAS THE SAME AS THE ACTOR, BLAH BLAH.. MUST BE THE SAME DOUCHE.

John Wayne Schulz started his career as a 14 year old teenager in 2002. He released a quite successful country album titled 'Ropin' Dreams'. This video shows pictures of a concert the young Schulz held back then.

TMZ GET IT RIGHT.... IT WAS NOT NOMINATED FOR 7 GRAMMYS. "ROPIN DREAMS" WAS IN THE PRE-NOMINATION CATEGORIES BUT DINT MAKE THE FINAL NOMINATIONS OF 5 IN EACH CATEGORY. SO HE WASNT NOMINATED AT ALL FOR THE FINAL GRAMMYS AWARDS.

C'mon. Quite regurgitating crap some angry pastor told you.

Mormons accept Jesus Christ as their savior.

If you want to know their beliefs instead of being an ignorant hate monger (how Christian is that?) visit: www.Mormon.org

He's gorgeous, but there was nothing special about his singing. The audition was boring, the song almost put me to sleep, and he didn't show any vocal range or emotion. If he was that good, record producers would have been all over him after he returned from his mission.

Country sucks so bad. :/

Mormonism is a cult. Not only is it not a Christian religion - it is a lifestyle requiring blind adherence to cult-like practices. Don't be fooled.

#19, you need to re-read what they said. TMZ said, "...one of his songs was considered for 7 Grammy nominations." Note - *considered* for seven Grammy *nominations*. Considerations for nominations, not nominated. -_-

The rules of AI are simple. You cannot have, or have had, any type of recording contract. It's supposedly supposed to be a show for the "hidden talent" out there. Yes, the show is a crapfest... it's rigged, and you can't get through unless you have a sob story or considerable talent. It's a television show... it's not reality. And no idiots... Mormons are NOT Christians. Christians are those who practice the faith of Christianity. Mormons practice Mormonism... a faith that's a stone-throw away from Scientology. Big shock... I'm an ex-Mormon... and I can safely say Joseph Smith was a crackpot. Course, now, I won't get that planet all to myself when I die. Oh well...

AI only requires that you don't have a current recording contract. Many of the past AI contestants and winners had previously been under contract and produced CDs (David Cook, Chris Daughtry, Lee DeWyze, Carly Smithson, Michael Johns, Kristi Lee Cook to name a few). Personally I enjoyed the show more when the contestants were complete unknowns looking for their first break.

Carrie Underwood NEVER lived on a farm either. It was her rather well-to-do grandparents' farm on which she was pictured during Idol.

Not that she can't sing goooooood!

John Wayne S is also a good singer, so what? The days of Idol innocence is long gone.

To TRUTH about your posting - TMZ did state it correct about his being CONSIDERED for a Grammy - they did not mislead by saying he was nominated.

There have been several contestants on AI who have had contracts. I don't remember the exact wording, but AI did mention that he was not new to performing.

Lying, deceiving people, and pretending to be something he's not. Yep, he's definitely mormon. Grew up in that church going every Sunday for 18 years and they are all FAKE.
