Steve Harvey -- Outrage Over Paperback Book Mystery

2/4/2011 9:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Steve Harvey gave one of his fans a $100 bill in exchange for a copy of his new book -- after the comic  noticed something about the cover that could expose a thief ... TMZ has learned.

0203_STEVE_HARVEY_ex_wm
It all went down at a book signing in Virgina last month -- when a woman handed Steve a paperback edition of his new book, "Straight Talk, No Chaser."

We're told Steve quickly realized the paperback edition has NOT been released yet and asked the woman where she obtained it. The woman insisted she bought it at a local store and even produced a receipt.

Steve offered the woman a cool $100 to keep the book -- and gave her a free hardback edition. But now, he's embarked on a mission to find out who leaked the paperback version ... and make whoever is responsible PAY.

So far, no official comment from Harvey's camp. Thanks to 106.5 The Beat for the pic.

Is it a good idea to write a book when 3/4 of the people who would want to read it are illiterate?

Where exactly is Virgina?

For all the money TMZ brings in, you'd think they would hire a better proofreader.

I agree with Captain Balls. Who the he&! would read a book "written" by this man? Seriously, this guy can barely speak English. Thank God Oprah finally saw through his crap and would not allow him on her new network. Bernie Mac's langauage was a bit hard to understand too but at least he was likeable and true to himself. Steve Harvey is a fake loser. Long live The Mac!

By giving her $100 for her troubles and a hardback he is showing his appreciation to her for helping him find who is selling these books. It was really a small thing for him to do when you look at the big picture. He makes a percentage off of each book he sells and isn't making anything on these black market books. It was the right thing for him to do.

If the book just came out in hardcover (which must be the case because he's out on the road signing hardcovers), the paperback isn't even PRINTED yet because, duh, if the hardcover tanks, there won't even be a paperback. What that woman had in her possession was no doubt bound page proofs sent out to book reviewers. On the surface they often look exactly like a paperback, except for the "not for resale" notice located somewhere. Nevertheless they end up in used bookstores (and on Ebay) all the time.

He should have given her 500.00 dollars for the book without a copy of the hardcover one. This fool walks out on women and children then gets saved and wants to write books about how its suppose to be done. Child please. I believe God is a redeemer but he needs to stop a little bit more of the evil things, and for a little bit longer before he can convince me and those in my circle that he knows anything. Cuz right now isn't he suing his ex, whom I for one hadn't heard anything coming from her.

Another "I'm shocked, shocked that gambling is going on here " moment. It's a PR move and a weak one at that.

LET'S GET REAL...this book was most likely ghost-written, meaning someone else wrote it and then they plopped a celebrity name on it to make it sell better. Steve might've come up with the idea for the basic plot or character, but he didn't sit down and compose this.

Anyone SERIOUSLY think LC Conrad actually wrote her book? Or Paris Hilton ACTUALLY wrote her autobiography? Ghostwriting is a popular tactic because celebs can get on national talk shows to promote the book way better than some talented rookie no-name writer.

Ghost writers still get paid, but to see celebrities running off with the credit is just sickening.
