Unless you have suffered ten minutes with ulcerative colitis you will never understand the chronic pain, endless suffering and extreme debilitation this disease, and the current medical treatments to attempt to control the symptoms, inflicts on it's sufferers. NO ONE fakes a hospital admission for DRAMA or would be willing to lose a spot on the idol show when they are auditioning for a show that they have waited their entire life to be a part of. This is the VERY reason this disease is a closet disease as people are embarrassed to talk about it due to the nature of the symptoms and due to the fact people like to think "STRESS" causes it.

Stress DOES NOT cause ulcerative colitis, Stress, lack of sleep, poor diet etc. can all help exacerbate it's symptoms and create an acute flare up, however it is in no way the cause of the disease. Once diagnosed, this is a chronic life long autoimmune condition, with strong genetic components, for which there is no CURRENT cure other than complete surgical removal of your colon (colectomy).

After struggling relentlessly with this disease for several years and the abysmal medical treatments offered today to attempt to control the symptoms, throughout what should have been the best years of my life, this disease instead has totally robbed me. I feel incredibly let down by the medical community and know if i had cancer or a more common medical disease, my treatments and their success would be so much greater.

Ulcerative colitis has had a profound impact on my social and professional life( have not worked in over 6 years) as well as an impact on my marital life, my extended families lives and on my support network. Everyone close to the colitis sufferer also suffers due to lack of control to help ease the colitis patient's pain to common daily interruptions in everyone's daily schedules.

Ulcerative colitis has had a severe impact on my finances and my patience, mental health and faith in God have from been severely tested over the years.

Ulcerative colitis has been called "the ugliest" disease known to man, but is not given the appropriate medical funding and research or recognition due to the fact that only affects about 1.5 million people. I have finally been forced to have surgery not willingly, but because my colon cancer risk is now extremely heightened (think Tony Snow).

Casey...be brave...please do not be embarrassed to use your spotlight to share this illness and shed light on the pain and suffering it causes even though the symptoms can be very embarrassing to discuss publicly. Maybe from your courage and honesty, some good will come out of this and more awareness and funding will occur to find a cure for this disease that does not mean losing your colon and quite possibly ending up with a permanent ostomy if jpouch surgery does not work for you.

God bless you. I will pray for your renewed health and your re-joining the show and I will be voting for you to be the next American Idol as you certainly have the talent to win!!!!!!!!!!!!
