Mike Starr -- Mixing Drugs Hours Before Death

3/9/2011 4:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Alice in Chains bass player Mike Starr was "mixing" methadone and anxiety medication hours before he died ... this according to Mike's roommate.

Mike Starr Drugs

The roommate tells TMZ ... Mike had been using methadone recently in an effort to get sober -- but he had also been taking medication to battle anxiety issues he had been suffering from since his arrest last month.

We're told Mike was doing a pretty good job managing his medication -- but according to Mike's roommate, Starr was "mixing" the meds Monday night .. just hours before he died.

Law enforcement sources tell us Mike's official cause of death has yet to be determined.

Starr's roommate added, "Mike was a beautiful person who was fighting to stay sober ... I am going to miss him greatly."

itoldu,

yes, you can get it at CVS. also, Walgreens. how do i know? my pain doctor prescribed it as an adjunct med for my pain to go along with hydrocodone. i am NOT taking it. i prefer not to take what killed Daniel and Anna Nicole Smith and now most likely Mike Starr.

i read on the FDA web site, however, that the government is going to be taking a look at methadone, as well as a few other opiates, to see if they should really be on the market to the public. now that there is suboxone, it's quite likely the FDA will pull methadone off the market completely - though the FDA is taking their time to do their research. more people will die in the meantime.

you used to have to sign paperwork, be fingerprinted, have your picture taken to get methadone. now you just need a prescription and a pharmacy and insurance or the money to pay for it and it comes in handy pill form. crazy, right?

Dr. "Quack" Drew should learn something from David Wilkerson, founder of Teen Challenge..... "Compassion without wisdom equals pity."

Quack Doctor does not have a clue on how to professionaly treat hard-care drug addicts. David Wilkerson has been doing that for 50 years and has a very high percertange of successes.

Hey... Doctor Drew - go back to school maybe enroll in Teen Challenge Ministry Institute ... maybe you will learn something other than making guys like Mike Starr go through a 21 day television rehab. What a freaking joke. You should be locked up for life.

Dr. Drew was right. Addiction is a disease that kills. If you think you might have it, please go and get help.

Dr Quack Drew might be right in saying addictions kills. However, he does not have a clue on how to properly treat addicts. Not one clue. He is a snakeoil salesman ... with a acting sense of compassion.

"Compassion without wisdom is pity"

All the good quack doctor does have is enough compassion that all it really is is pity. He has no wisdom at all on how to treat hardcore addicts. Not a clue. Not even a little one.

#44 pelosisux, you said it best. Absolutely, hell yes. That "special"-ness will kill ya, won't it? So "special" you don't have to follow the same rules as the rest of us. So "special" you don't have to take other people's feelings into consideration. So "special" you don't have to listen. So "special" you don't have to. Just too, too "special" to live. The burden of "self" is enormous.

NO... he was heartbroken and his soul was too, ever since his close friend Layne died. It had nothing to do with not being a famous rock star anymore!! Read a book about addiction!! Show some respect people!!

Hey #26, I certainly hope you're a perfect person, an incredibly strong willed person who hasn't got any flaws or ever made mistakes, and that every person you know and care for is the same.
It certainly seems as though you haven't known and can't understand the pain of emotional disorders and addiction. If only we could all be so lucky. Except, somewhere deep down, I am glad I do, because then I don't come across as arrogant, misinformed, and heartless.

RIP Mike Starr. He was fighting, but I think that he carried a lot of guilt, guilt that he needed to let go of in order to truly fight his addiction. The pain of guilt can be an incredible enemy to sobriety.
