Pentagon FURIOUS

How Did TMZ

Find Our Missile?

3/16/2011 10:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The U.S. Air Force sent special agents to Vegas yesterday to grill the guys from "Pawn Stars" ... trying to find out how they got ahold of the sophisticated missile equipment the feds read about on TMZ.com.

Sources connected to the situation tell us ... two members from the U.S. Air Force Special Investigations Unit rolled over to Gold and Silver Pawn yesterday wanting to check out the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile guidance system and missile parts the guys purchased just last week.

We're told the agents wanted to make sure the system was no longer active -- and pulled it apart to ensure it did not contain any important information.

The agents also inquired about the woman who sold the missile guts to the "Pawn Stars" -- a woman who claims she inherited the stuff from her father.

The seller had maintained that her dad purchased the items at an official military auction during the '80s ... and we're told she had the proper court-approved paperwork specifying she could legally sell the parts.

Here's the best part -- we're told while the agents were inside the shop, they explained how they were initially put on the case after someone from the Pentagon called up wanting to know why they were out of the loop about a missile featured on TMZ.com.

When called for comment, a rep from "Pawn Stars" confirmed agents from the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations did drop by the shop.

However, the rep insisted, "If the Air Force wants the missile back, we will gladly adhere to their request."

This is so funny. I love love love TMZ. They are not being full of themselves, they are making jokes about what the judge told Lindsay last week about TMZ being like the CIA because they know everything! This story has perfect timing, as always TMZ...I'm impressed.

Secret agent Harvey Levin, code name U812 is on the trail of a 30+ year old part of an air defense missile, we all feel safer with him on the job!
Anybody want to guess how outdated and irrelevant a piece of a AMRAAM that is that old might be?
The Pentagon is Furious, I doubt it! Lieutenant Fuzz blew a gasket!
The Air Force Office of Special Investigation is plain clothes military guys and they probably were on a mission to verify the antique status of the part.
Slow news day TMZ???

Great publicity for Harvey & the TMZ Gang

Even better PR score for Rick and the Pawn Stars Crew.

US Military Surplus all has Demil codes that require any 'hot fire' items to be demilitarized so the part cannot be used as originally designed.

Demilitarization usually means crushed, destroyed, melted or whatever.

If the original owner purchased the item in the 1980's before the DRMS / DRMO was privatized as the reports state, then this is a piece of obsolete equipment.

What blows my mind is that anyone would think Rick is stupid enough to buy an illegal item...

Did anyone see the episode where someone tried to sell a hat they said he stole from a drunk Moscow Police Officer?

The guys said it was neat but it was stolen so see you later, bye...

Great PR piece for everyone involved.

To clear some of this up.
1. US government property is sold ALL the time, often by the pallet at auctions.
2. The technology sold was deemed scrap and sold at auction, with the necessary paperwork that deemed it to be DEMILLED. Further any of the sensitive electronics and data were removed as part of the demilling process.
3. The reason this was such a "big deal" was because members of the production company called the DoD because they thought it would make for good TV, not anything to do with TMZ.

TMZ didn't do anything except report what Pawn Stars purchased, which people who watch that show would have found out by watching the television show...

..so, TMZ you're kind of tooting your own horn a little loudly, or is it that it tickles you pink that somebody who works at The Pentagon reads TMZ? Maybe that's what it really is, hmmm?

Nice stroking your own ego, TMZ. And - Pawn Stars is unbelievably fake and scripted.

Something still doesn't sound right. Why would the military sell parts to an AIM-120 AMRAAM during it's development in the the 1980s? It didn't even reach it's IOC till 1991, and first combat use in 1992.

There are mostly export restricted scrap also. Most likely they wanted to make sure any FoF stuff/control routines and comms specifications (the a link with the jet) were beyond reverse engineering. Most likely old hat anyway, but they wouldn't want to risk it on principle. Quite sensible. Most likely useless junk best suited to collectors.
