Mel Gibson -- Kid Tested, Father Approved

3/20/2011 10:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Mel Gibson is set to begin his court ordered community service at a kid's charity in L.A. soon -- and  he's already getting support from some of the parents ... TMZ has learned.

In fact, one set of parents associated with Mending Kids International tells us they're more than happy to help give the actor a "brand new start" because Mel has helped fund a life-changing series of operations for their foster son over the past couple of years.

James Nicol tells us his Ethiopian-born son Berhanu was only able to undergo an expensive series of medical procedures to help fix severe spinal issues ... thanks, in part, to Mel's generosity.

Nicol says his family is still active with the organization ... and they're excited for any assistance Mel can provide ... despite the fact his community service is the result of a plea deal in a domestic violence case.

James says he completely trusts the actor around his child ... saying, "If Mel was coming over to our house to play ball with my son, I would not be the least bit concerned."

Mel can help with organizing another benefit,
to help raise more funds for this charity.

Nov 6, 2009 Mel's son in law, Kenny Wayne Shepherd
performed at the Rock'n Blues Benefit and helped
raise over 200,000. Ted Danson and Dean Cain were
among the celebrities that attended the benefit.

In the last 5 years, this charity has helped over
500 kids from 39 countries by bringing them to
US and making necessary surgeries possible.

Mel loves children, not just his own,
and he has been a good father.

Go, Mel.

Who cares if this is his plea deal? It's not like he hasn't helped this charity out previously. Don't make it sound like he just walked into this place because he had to.

Mel can teach your child all about being a racist and an anti-semite and how to slap around women and how to bury them in the backyard. Charming.

Gee, Phil, I wonder what race this Ethiopian-born child is? Do you suppose he will grow up thinking Mel Gibson is a racist just because you said he is?

That's so awesome that all of these kids parents are excited about Mel working at the charity. He's been so great getting help for so many kids. Everyone deserves another chance. I discount any of those remarks---everyone says things they don't mean when they're angry. I've heard people say a lot worse. Sounds like people are finally moving on from this! Mel will do great as far as his career. He's one of the best actors ever!

Mel has a wicked bad temper so I don't think I myself would take the chance around my kid but hopefully he'll be in a happy, mellow mood and all will go well.

He's a great actor. It's a shame he can't get his anger under control, and then do a ton of things to make up to the communities he's insulted. And get some major anger management help.
