Willie Nelson Pot Case

Let Him Sing for His Freedom

3/28/2011 6:01 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Willie Nelson’s pot possession case could end on a high note -- because the singer may get off with little more than a small fine ... if he agrees to SING IN COURT.

Willie Nelson

Nelson was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession back in November ... after U.S. Border Patrol in Texas found weed on his tour bus -- but the prosecutor in the case is willing to let Willie off with a $100 fine ... if he sings "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” INSIDE  the courtroom.

According to the prosecutor, the song would count as his community service -- but Willie's punishment ultimately rests in the judge's hands.

No word if Nelson will accept the offer ... but it's a good deal -- because if he gets convicted he faces a maximum of 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.

I like Willie Nelson but what the hell is wrong with our justice system when someone famous has to sing to get out of a charge that any regular person would time over? Ridiculous.

i would love to know what part of that trial or hearing you're leaving out of this story :P. i'm sure this is probably taken somewhat out of context and i would love to know exactly upon what context this was agreed.

Too bad judges don't like rap. Maybe Willie should sing "F*ck the System!" by System of A Down instead.

As a second comment, that's just the prosecutor's recommendation. They can all make that deal but the Judge doesn't have to do it; he can tell them all to f**k off, basically, and sentence him how he wants, as long as it's within the guidelines, so no reason to think that he may actually get this deal, especially if the Judge doesn't like it, him, or whatever, about the cir***stances.

I suppose the prosecutor can make just about any suggestion he wants to the judge, realizing that representative of the court system each has a reputuation to protect.

Ideally, Willie would accommodate the prosecutor's request (if the judge allows) but then step up to the plate and ALSO request to do the time AND pay the fine. Failing that, Nelson would sing and then promise never to repeat the illegal offense.

I know Willie well enough to know that he is a man of his word, so, if Nelson stops reading his own outdated "outlaw" publicity and sees the wisdom of growing up, think how his message about personal integrity, the optimum outcome of receiving celebrity justice and respect for the law would reverberate!

Man up, Willie!

I don't think pot is great, and I think it slowly sucks the life out of its users. But considering the big picture, it is so far from a serious crime. why do cops care about pot?
