Jalen Rose -- Arrested for DUI

3/29/2011 7:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Basketball stud Jalen Rose -- a member of the legendary "Fab Five" squad -- was arrested for driving under the influence in Michigan earlier this month ... TMZ has learned.

Jalen Rose Arrested

Law enforcement sources tell us ... the 38-year-old former NBA star was driving along an icy roadway on March 11 when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed.

Cops were called to the scene and Rose agreed to undergo several voluntary roadside sobriety tests. He was later transported to a nearby facility for chemical testing ... those results have not yet been returned. Rose was eventually arrested for driving under the influence.

We're told Rose was in his hometown of Detroit in preparation for the opening of the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy ... a charter school designed to provide under-privileged youth with college prep experience.

TMZ spoke with Rose's L.A.-based attorney, Keith Davidson, who told us, "We look forward to working with the authorities in Michigan and addressing these matters in court, not in the press. We have no comment at this time."

Every week it seems there is a report of some celebrity or sports star getting a DUI. Is there something wrong with all their brains? They make so much money and yet don't have enough common sense to call a cab? They'd rather take a chance that they could kill someone??

Hawthorne Wingo

He wasn't charged with DUI. He was charged with DWB!

Thank you, but I'll wait for the blood alcohol results to come back before I judge, unlike some douche bags like "John Rossi" (see Mr. Rossi's comment for the full flavor of what I'm talking about). Black men in nice automobiles get stopped for illegal reasons all the time. It's called "Driving While Black."

Assuming Jalen was driving under the influence, then I'm disappointed and glad no one was injured. That, however, does not negate all the good work Jalen's done for underprivileged children through his charter school. He, unlike Mr. Rossi, has put his money where his mouth is.

If Jalen is having a problem with alcohol, I hope he gets the help he needs.

What? A basketball player breaking the law??? Noooooooooooooo.

I think if the pro sports leagues here adopted a policy where anyone who breaks the law isn't allowed to play pro anymore, it would open up a lot more jobs for the jobless folks who are in shape... 'cause 90% of the pro sports players would be kicked off the teams.

It's easy to bust on Rose for this, but I'm not jumping on that band-wagon. Driving under the influence is bad, but Rose has a lot of company out there, and if he did a DUI, he'll pay for the violation. Otherwise, he's been a pretty solid citizen, so far as I can tell.

Why can't these ballers, actors, and all the rest wait until they get home to do their heavy drinking or if they're going to drink while out at least call a cab or take their driver with them.

That's pretty ironic and not to mention, embarrassing for him to get arrested just before the opening of his Leadership Academy. While I know that people make mistakes and grossly underestimate the effects of drinking and driving, his arrest will hardly reflect well on his school. That's quite sad since his vision for a charter school for under-privileged youth will have changed the lives of so many.
