Kurt Cobain Shrine -- Set in Stone

4/5/2011 4:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain has yet another way to be immortalized -- TMZ has learned, a 13-foot statue of a guitar was erected today ... in honor of the 17th anniversary of his death.

The statue will be unveiled this afternoon in Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen, WA.  We're told his grandfather is expected to attend, as well as former band members from Nirvana.

TMZ spoke with the statue's artist -- Lora Malakoff -- who tells us, the guitar will rest near the infamous Young Street Bridge, which the musician often sought refuge under to write lyrics.

A moment of silence please.

Kurt said he liked those Fender Jaguars cause they sounded like crap. Funny guy that Kurt was.

...If there's one think that Kurt Cobain would have wanted it would be to have a statue erected in his honor with tons of media around... and to be a trending topic on twitter.

For you ignorant ****s who don't know anything, Kurt Cobain almost single-handedly changed the (terrible) direction rock and roll was headed. For the idiots on here bad-mouthing him, I suspect you're the type of douchebags who have helped to make all the auto-tuned nobodies as famous as they are today. Go back to your Kesha CD,s now, *******s.

He wasn't a great guitar player, but the words he wrote are fantastic. Unfortunately his need for drugs outweighed the life he led. He gave up his kids, wife and career for the drugs and suicide. Instead of a guitar, maybe a large hypodermic needle would be a better tribute.

That guitar is a Jag-Stang. Kurt designed it as a cross between a Fender Jaguar and a Fender Mustang. Fender built and delivered one to him shortly before his death but he rarely played it, he didn't like it. He may have eventually but it just wasn't quite right for him. Fender built a Japanese model for sale to the public for a short time after his death but it really wasn't the guitar that should have been created for a memorial. He will always be best known for playing a righty Mustang strung left handed. He played a few different guitars but the Mustang is forever going to be the guitar connected to him. He really never had a connection with the Jag-Stang except for it's concept. Fender just made some money on it after his death.

The guy was an active dope fiend s*** bag killer (he killed himself) and for that a shrine? A mediocre voice in a mediocre band that caught a break! The shrine should be a giant syringe with a belt wrapped around it!

So.. we're dedicating statues to drug addicted losers who abandon their families and shoot themselves..? What a frickin waste of perfectly good cement! Similar to Cobain, who was quite the waste of oxygen. Ridiculous.

Hey Fish, look again... That IS a left handed guitar, it's just tilted back because of the angle of the back of the guitar.

As for the ones that say he couldn't play actually he really could play pretty well. His tunes were very basic and he wasn't a great soloist but he could play tons of songs and was pretty fast. It's a joke so many non guitarists comment on something they no nothing about.

Oh you've gotta be kidding. First of all he was the poster boy for grunge-rock, very much a cult favorite. Secondly, he was just another depressed kid who self-medicated until he finally blew his brains out. Very sad since he left a beautiful child behind.
