Kurt Cobain Shrine -- Set in Stone

4/5/2011 4:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain has yet another way to be immortalized -- TMZ has learned, a 13-foot statue of a guitar was erected today ... in honor of the 17th anniversary of his death.

The statue will be unveiled this afternoon in Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen, WA.  We're told his grandfather is expected to attend, as well as former band members from Nirvana.

TMZ spoke with the statue's artist -- Lora Malakoff -- who tells us, the guitar will rest near the infamous Young Street Bridge, which the musician often sought refuge under to write lyrics.

A moment of silence please.

Its kinda hard to handle a shotgun when you have a dose of heroin in you that is 3 times more than a lethal amount. (Fact proved by the medical examiner) Its also kinda hard to wipe fingerprints off after you shot yourself in the head with a shotgun. No fingerprints were found on the gun)

Horrible looking statue. Not an accurate depiction of the guitar that he most often played(a Fender Mustang). And it's tilted to the right making it look like a left handed guitar strung for a right hander. Should be tilting to the left. I appreciate the gesture done on his behalf by his hometown but they could've done a much better job.

The first guy was making a joke, you idiots. Kurt Cobain wasn't a good guitar player and everyone knows it. Part of the reason grunge was significant is because it reintroduced the public to the idea that you don't have to be a good instrumentalist to write a good song.

By the way, the statue looks pretty dumb. It's like some bad 90s clipart.

#73, Art is in the eye of the beholder...I really don't think a pretty polished piece of art would have suited Kurt or his music...The tilt of the guitar is depicting the angle it would be slung over a guitarists back as they leave the stage. Kurt left the stage.
Amazing, all the negative comments on this one piece of art...and about an obviously human person who committed suicide. Addiction is a horrible thing, it robs people of their lives and many times destroys other lives in its path. Suicide is even more horrible, it leaves children without parents and parents without children, it leaves a wake of pain and confusion and anger... It sucks that he died, it sucks even more how he died. This memorial park is to remember the accomplishments of a young man who left his art, his family and his fans far too young. The monument does not glorify suicide nor does it expect to be considered "Pretty". Next to the guitar the steel ribbon states; " Just one more special message to go, and then I'm done & I can go home." We did understand his lyrics, our generation did...pity some didn't. No, it is not the guitar Kurt played most often, it is a jag-stang, the design he was still working on at the time of his death. The piece is solid reinforced concrete and steel, bolted down and welded as well. Can I also say...doesn't anyone have anything better to do with their lives than to hurl insults at total strangers online? I do...so good day to you all & I hope those of you who admired the works of Kurt Cobain enjoy the Park in Aberdeen. Kim & Lora Malakoff

People dont know much about good music. I guess lady ga ga is what's good now. He did what he did yes, selfish yes, talented very. A band that is still amazing and always will be remembered always. You should be happy your kids think letting their boxer shorts show when they walk is cool. Do them a favor or yourself one go buy them some nirvana and let them listen to good music. Some people on here are lost.
