Kobe

Fined $100k

'Offensive and Inexcusable'

4/13/2011 6:52 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Kobe Bryant was just fined $100k by the NBA for his homophobic slur at the Lakers game last night.

NBA Commissioner David Stern says, "Kobe Bryant’s comment during last night’s game was offensive and inexcusable. "

He continues, "While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated.  Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000.  Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.”

As we previously reported, Kobe mouthed the words, "f**king f**got" after getting a technical foul during the game.

FYI -- according to Forbes.com, Kobe made an estimated $48 million last year in salary and endorsements.

UPDATE: A rep for the Human Rights Campaign -- an LGBT civil rights organization -- tells TMZ, "We applaud Commissioner Stern and the NBA for not only fining Bryant but for recognizing that slurs and derogatory comments have no place on the basketball court or in society at large."

DrkAnjl, fa**ot is an anti-gay slur. It's that simple. As for being insulted for being labeled who you are, it's about context. But, I think you know this and are being disingenuous.

Brasil, the WORD itself is the issue. Not WHO the word is attacking. Not WHO said it. The word ITSELF is offensive. When you use an offensive WORD against a person for who they are, you are saying you are bad, this is why (insert slur). Instead, you are bad because of what you did, you are saying you are bad for who you are. That's the difference. And saying someone/something is bad for who they are is effectively saying who they are is wrong, and that is the issue here.

The main slur I know used against heterosexuals is breeder. And yeah, if a gay person uses it against a heterosexual, they should be called out. And generally are. But gay people don't use that word in society, unlike heterosexuals, who do use the f-word. That's a double standard issue.

I've gotten mad, we all have obviously, but I've never used a gay slur. It's not in my DNA to use gay slurs. Kobe used a gay slur immediately after being angry. That says a lot about his mentality. It also says a lot about the mentality of others that they excuse it, and don't realize the depth of his usage of this slur.

Quit whining, live and let live, and again, quit whining! Heterosexual men don't stage a march every time a pre-op Tranny goes to get his schlong hacked-off. Personally, I find the idea horrifying, but hey, as long as it's your trouser snake and not mine, whatever--you go girl! Just don't try to force me to like what you like, or approve of what you approve of, or tell me how to express myself. If you can express yourself by dressing up as Carmen Miranda in platform high heels singing "It's raining Men" and grabbing random dudes' azzes on Halloween in West Hollywood and winding up the night with an all-male bukkake session in an apartment above a disco...how can you have a problem with the way someone else expresses what in THEIR hearts, as long as they keep their hands to themselves???

en Todo Momento!!

how is it even possible to outlaw a term used culturally as an insult and fine someone for that? i mean if someone uses the n-word the wrong way, i am sure some african american folks will make sure that person figures it out for themselves that they better think twice about it next time. but homosexuals?? (f.a.g.g.i.t.s!!??) what is their approach to someone using the fa-g-word???! in reality, they don't have a 'collective response' and actually use it amongst themselves (similar to blacks and the n-word). so why is 'the law' sooo vehement about punishing the use of the homosexual f-a-g-word as a hate crime, when it is simply an insult and meant to be used as such? i mean legal back-up? that is absurd, really. are we going to erase all possible terms for/of insults from the english spoken and written language??

When did we become such a weak society? What happened to the first amendment? We as a society are just a bunch of sheep, you know they use sheep skin for condoms, why? because their skin so soooo thin. Please people grow a backbone! What happened to America? We have become overrun by hyper sensitive people that get sidetracked by the littlest things. No wonder our country is looked at like such a joke world wide. He said this to the ref, that's who it was directed towards, this ref isn't gay, so it wasn't offensive to him. So please grow some thick skin and go do something worth while with your life.

Wow people take things way too seriously, most people say dumb things when pissed off. I see point in fining these guys, 100K is like nothing to them. Yeah what he said was wrong but still why should you let the words of someone you don't know bother you? Let me guess oh he has to be a role model right? Parents should to be the role models for their children not famous people. Guess what world? We all make mistakes!

Everyone needs to chill out, it was wrong of him to say it like that knowing kids watch these games on tv. But we all make mistakes, we are only human and emotions some times gets the best of us. But everyone now talking smack about him makes you no better than what your supposedly against. Spewing even more hate. American people now bitch about the simplest things. Stop being so sensitive about the smallest things. Being a 6 yr USMC vet makes me worry about the people leading this country into the ground because being this sensitive :( Man the F up and change you pad America!!!

This is retarded! Just cause he's rich as hell... what did he sign a contract that says he can't ever use a swear word or he has to cough up six figures to the NBA.

Works both ways... if he got off the hook and someone else of lesser means had to pay people would be freaking out. Everyone is ok w/ it though since it's Kobe Bryant and he has millions of dollars.
