Kobe Apologizes to Gay Rights Group

4/13/2011 10:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Kobe Bryant just got off the phone with the president of a gay rights organization -- and apologized for using a gay slur last night ... TMZ has learned.

Bryant spoke with Human Rights Campaign honcho Joe Solmonese -- who tells TMZ, "I applaud Kobe Bryant for his swift apology. We had a very sincere conversation in which he expressed his heartfelt regret for the hurt that his words caused."

Solmonese adds, "He told me that it’s never OK to degrade or tease, and that he understands how his words could unfortunately give the wrong impression that this is appropriate conduct."

"At the end of a difficult day, I applaud Kobe for coming forward and taking responsibility for his actions."

ketjo is so ignorant it's disgusting. please don't ever have children. yes, everyone should apologize when they make a mistake. using hate speech, whether intended or not, is never acceptable. we must work together as species to save ourselves from the greed destroying this earth. our time is running out fast with the destructive ways we are using our resources. homosexuality is biological change for a social evolution to combat over-population. we don't hate heterosexuals nor do we blame the few who are so ignorant they gang together beating us up and screaming FA* in our faces. some of us have actually been killed during this. we understand people don't fully understand yet so we are trying to educate. we must stop hating people for no reason or we will never progress to the next stage of our existence.

i mean as an organization, don't these people think that collectively 'franchising' someone's ability to defend themselves, eventually leads to a selective operation/order of then having to be entitled to receive any form of defense from then on, from this 'order' and or system, as long as one is 'a welcome' within it? because eventually (not that this is not already the case...), rights will be things one must engratiate oneself for, towards an elite who holds all access thereto in their hands (legal order, aka 'justice').

if the referee himself was not offended, then why is this being turned into a scandal? must be a source of income for some, to exaggerate an issue to this degree.

i mean i get it, that cursing and violent language should not be condoned by athletes and athletic organizations, in the public eye, but do they mostly never curse in such forms, or was it ONLY because it was a slur referring to a homosexual male, that turned it into a media issue? because it seems like athletes in general use a lot of cursing, especially the b-word (denegrating ALL WOMEN!), the f-word and probably a whole lotta other bad words, but only the homosexual male denigrating f-word is signaled as heinous, so openly.

I know there are gay people out here that wishes the kittens would just shut the hell up. You are taking this way too far and you will wish you could do this all over again when you find out some of the outraged people will now tell you what your public acts do to CHILDREN.

There are ignorant people from any and every group of people and you have truly shown your _________well, you know. I can tell you, you are making it hard for the decent homosexuals. Your support will drop and you will find more and more people using worse names for you and that is as unfair to others as your rage against Kobe is.

I would not give you a dime, I damn sure would NOT attend your games, and if you keep asking Kobe to do certain things that YOU say will make his apology ligit, I will save him further trouble by saying....."I will do what you want just as soon as snakes get hips and do the watutsi." Probably spelled wrong, but perhaps you get my meaning.

From now on, every little trouble you cause, every time you get sexual in family places, everytime you wonder why your support is muted, you will remember and decide your rants on Kobe was not worth it.

The BIGOTS just want this to go away as soon as possible because they are cowardly and they don't want to be exposed for what they truly are ... bullies until someone confronts them on it.

Gotta love the power of videos to record some truths. :))

This country makes me sick with there degradation of people! Its ok to say horrible things to people of the lgbt community..but, not the the african american community! WTF...wrong is wrong, and if you don't like something get over it. Times are changing and the world has more then just straight people in it! But, hay..lets promote bullying, pregnancy in teens with tv shows, and the uses of drugs amongst the youth..since homophobia is way more important!

Marc Freden

You have Kobe Bryant shouting out the word ******...then again with the jets guy and David Tyree speaking out against Gay Marriage...and of course you have Tracey Morgan being downright hateful against gays and there are no ramifications. Even the sight of Weiner's Weiner has brought down a Congressman. Are people that afraid of Gays in this day and age? Well Marc Freden, too, has been given pause with the issue.

As a gay man, even he feels the need to apologize for the blatant use of the word "******" in his new book "REALLY!?!" Now Freden using the "F" word should get a tacit pass...much like black people using the "N" word to describe themselves. His harmless use of the word...(And you must read the book to understand) has lead him to a video mea culpa on YouTube "Marc Freden Must Apologize to the Gay Community".

Furthermore, Freden has pledged that if Kobe Bryant can be fined $50,000 then he too should pay a price. A percentage of every book sold as a result of his apology will go to the Trevor Project - a gay hot line for distressed teens looking for a voice of calm and understanding. It is the least he can do. Who will join Freden in this cause?
