Lady Gaga

I Didn't Reject

Weird Al Yankovic

4/20/2011 4:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Lady Gaga is adamant ... she did NOT ban Weird Al Yankovic from parodying her hit song "Born This Way" -- despite Al's accusation that the pop star shut him down hard recently.

Weird Al ripped into Gaga on his blog this morning -- claiming the egg-encased pop star strung him along for weeks while he tried to get her approval for his parody "Perform This Way" ... and ultimately rejected the proposal.

But sources extremely close to the singer tell us, "There must have been a misunderstanding because [Gaga] is in no way trying to block the release of the parody."

According to sources, "She's busy touring and hasn't heard the song yet. Her manager hasn't had a chance to play it for her yet" -- adding, "She's a huge Weird Al fan."

A bizarre situation -- because Al claims Gaga's manager is the one who denied him in the first place ... forcing him to release "Perform This Way" unofficially on YouTube.

Satire and parody are protected under the first amendment. He doesn't have to ask, but he still does.

Of course she denied him the right to record the parody. She didn't expect him to go public with it, so now see is trying to cover her a**!!!

@If sense... you are mistaken. Coolio's producers ok'ed it; Al has the signed paperwork. You are also mistaken about his reasons for releasing this one on YouTube. It won't be part of the album; the single will net him no income, though it wouldn't have anyway, since he planned to donate the proceeds to HRC. He released it because he has no compunction about putting it out there for free when he gets jerked around instead of just being told "no". Artists have told him no before; he has always respected that. But then, no artist has ever pulled THIS crap before.

I must admit, its pretty good and she'd be wrong not to let him release it, especially if the proceeds are benefitting charity. I'm not usually an Al fan, but he hit the nail on the head with this one!

Weird Al has been entertaining since before Gaga hatched, and he has a pretty good record for being a stand up guy, even while poking fun at people. His word is WAY easier to trust than a self obsessed pop star who only been around for the blink of an eye.

It sounds like it was just a misunderstanding or the fault of Gaga's manager. Weird Al is hilarious and most popular artists not only like him, but also consider it a rite of passage when he parodies one of their songs.

You are nothing in todays music industry unless Wierd Al does one of your songs.

@If sense... What Harry said. Weird Al is not legally required to ask an artist's permission to parody them, but it's his own personal standard to do so. And like Harry said, he is releasing it for free (and encouraging those who like the song to donate to HRC, which is where the proceeds from the song would have gone ANYWAY) - don't you think that he has every reason to do that considering it is not only perfectly legal, but that he put in a great deal of time, effort AND money to record the parody (at Gaga's insistence)?

It's a great song, and if it gets people to donate to HRC, well then it's not only entertaining, but serving a worthy purpose at the same time!

He can use the song if he wants without asking. Weird Al has always been professional in asking people first if they mind at all. Coolio was an exception with Gangsta's Paradise. He said if he ever met Weird Al, he'd hurt him bad. My question is, where is Coolio now?
I've always been a believer that having a song parodied by Weird Al was the same as if you were a comedian and Carson called you over to be interviewed after your stage time. It means you're worth something. Gaga {who I can't stand} should be thankful that Weird Al finds her music{?} good enough to use.

GagGag is way full of herself if she is anything short of thrilled and flattered to be the subject of an Al parody.

Let's see.
Artists who were psyched to be parodied by Al: Michael Jackson, Nirvana, DEVO, etc., etc.
Artists who were not psyched to be parodied by Al: Coolio.
