New Kid on the Block Finds New Kidney for Fan

4/26/2011 1:30 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

It's official ... Twitter saves lives -- in fact, Donnie Wahlberg from New Kids on the Block was able to help find a NEW KIDNEY for an extremely sick fan ... using nothing but the social networking site.

It all started with a tweet from the fan's best friend who was trying to raise awareness about the girl's dire situation -- one of her kidneys was failing ... fast.

Donnie retweeted the link to his 183,000 followers, asking for help ... prompting a barrage of phone calls to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where the girl -- named Bobbette Miller -- was being treated.

According to the Boston Herald, the calls yielded SIX matches -- and Bobbette is now scheduled for a transplant in June.

Ah, the power of 140 characters or less.

MORE of this kind of story and LESS of endless Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snookie and other realty 'stars' etc. Kudos to Donnie for being a rare breed of celeb these days who did something without being paid or alot of pre-arranged fan fare and PR! Many of the A-list celebs wouldn't have done this without something in it for an image boost. AND Kudos to the best friend for putting herself out there for a friend in need!!! Good luck girl! You obviously have good people around you!

Wow! Way to be a hero, Donnie! You saved that girl's life and made all your fans proud. :) So nice to see a celebrity using their power and influence for good instead of their own self-indulgence! This is an awesome story.

However, the best friend also deserves credit for coming up with the idea to contact Donnie about this. Bobbette is really lucky to have this girl for a friend! If only everyone were so lucky!

God Bless you Donnie for taking the time to make a difference in this world. To help save a life is the greatest gift of all. I hope others will learn from your example, and use their celebrity status to take the time to assist another in need. All it took was a few minutes of his time (sending out a tweet).
His compassionate nature responded to the need, and acted on it.
If only others could do the same, how many lifes could be saved, or changed. God Bless you, and this young girl who's life you have saved.

Jescina Miller

I am Bobbette's niece and I am so thankful that she has found a donor, and I give my thanks to Donnie and her bff who put this out there to help her.I love her so much and she deserves this and the help that she is getting.
(And "just saying" (PCS in NC),you need to know the whole back story before you start saying things like you did,it has been a long time since she has been waiting for this transplant.)
But in all my aunt is a fighter, even though some days she feels bad and sick she still does what she has to do to go on.I LOVE YOU AUNT BOBBY,and June 23rd I hope everything goes GREAT,I think I am going to make a t-shirt. AND... for more of the story go to this link..... ( )GOD BLESS!

@Hey Look at me...You MUST have forgotten the Asian incident because that was his BROTHER MARK! Donnie has always been the good guy. Kudos for what he did, and I hope that fans will donate to others in need :)

well THAT is awesome. just amazing...testament to the positivity and negativity that "stars" and "celebraities" can put out there in the world. In this case, it's a good thing this man used his celebrity for good. Seems like a pretty good way to find organ matches...a lot of fans would jump at the chance to donate, when they might not otherwise.

Very nice Mr. W! It's good to read a story where social media is used for positive purposes.

get a clue

in response to HEY LOOK AT ME comment: that was mark whalberg, not donnie.

And come on people those incidents happened when mark was 16. that was over 20 years ago and he was just a kid, two indidents dont make you a racist. especially since nothing else like that has happened, people change and he obviously has. I am all for mark starring in the re make of the crow because he is a good actor and perfect for the role. he would do brandon lee justice.
