NFL Star Hines Ward -- Handcuffed at GUNPOINT

5/5/2011 6:10 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Pittsburgh Steelers superstar Hines Ward was removed from a vehicle at gunpoint by LAPD officers and placed in handcuffs this morning in L.A. -- but he was NOT arrested ... TMZ has learned.

Hines Ward

The "Dancing with the Stars" contestant was a passenger in a Honda Civic around 2 AM ... when LAPD officers flipped on their lights and sirens and pulled the car over.

Law enforcement sources tell us cops had run the license plate and noticed the car had been reported stolen.  We're told police drew their weapons ... and ordered both Hines and the female driver out of the car and placed them both in handcuffs.

The female driver then explained ... SHE was the person who reported the car stolen in the first place after an incident involving a valet. But she got her car back ... and forgot to tell cops to call off the alert.

We're told the officers verified her story -- and eventually let both Hines and the driver leave without further incident.  Law enforcement sources tell us Hines was VERY cooperative and understanding about the situation.

Nothing's changed with the L.A.P.D. and now even riding while Black can be hazardous to your health.
Here we go again playing the race card! They ran the plate and it came back stolen!!! I didn't come back, Black people in the car, pull them over! Get over it already!

Tammy, if you honestly believe he was with a hooker you're and idiot. My guess is it was just a friend or it was his DWTS partner.

Yes Cella what's really going on?

She reported the car missing to the police...how about the insurance company..did she report it to them too?
Mr. Hines shouldn't blame the police for doing their job...he should blame that dumb woman!

Carolyn: it's standard protocol in most police depts. to order ALL the occupants of a stolen car out of the vehicle. A stolen car can contain armed passengers. It's for officer safety, not just an L.A. thing.

Cella: most LAPD vehicles are now equipped with a plate reader that scans most license plates as they patrol, which has led to a huge number of recovered cars.

Riding while black, it is nothing new. Yet, to allegedly draw guns and all that is like almost "Rodney Kingish!" Good they did not pull a "Rodney King" 2AM in the morning!! at that!

Close call, good he will still get to be on DWS. It is good he did not go all "Bruce Lee" on em for he is multicultural.

@ jbeans: What "race card"? I didn't invent that, so don't impose it on me. Was the DRIVER ever handcuffed, and was the gun turned on HER? I contend that the driver of the vehicle, not the passenger, should have been the one handcuffed. Why was he?

@ Lisa: I do understand the protocol, but why was he cuffed? I appreciate that Mr. Hines took the whole incident in stride, but I see no reason for cuffing him, the passenger. Just because the driver was a female doesn't mean she couldn't have been the alleged car thief.

Sounds like the cops did the right thing. The woman is an idiot for not calling off the stolen car report.

where does it say that the female driver WAS NOT CUFFED.

I'm sure she was. but that doesn't really make a headline.

I'm sure they will cuff any and everybody in a vehicle suspected of being stolen. for their safety.
