NFL Star Hines Ward -- Handcuffed at GUNPOINT

5/5/2011 6:10 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Pittsburgh Steelers superstar Hines Ward was removed from a vehicle at gunpoint by LAPD officers and placed in handcuffs this morning in L.A. -- but he was NOT arrested ... TMZ has learned.

Hines Ward

The "Dancing with the Stars" contestant was a passenger in a Honda Civic around 2 AM ... when LAPD officers flipped on their lights and sirens and pulled the car over.

Law enforcement sources tell us cops had run the license plate and noticed the car had been reported stolen.  We're told police drew their weapons ... and ordered both Hines and the female driver out of the car and placed them both in handcuffs.

The female driver then explained ... SHE was the person who reported the car stolen in the first place after an incident involving a valet. But she got her car back ... and forgot to tell cops to call off the alert.

We're told the officers verified her story -- and eventually let both Hines and the driver leave without further incident.  Law enforcement sources tell us Hines was VERY cooperative and understanding about the situation.

Holy scary ****!! Whew..I am glad they are ok and Hines seems like such a nice all around good guy it would be hard to imagine him doing anything so bad that he would be arrested.

TMZ dont like me

Hines Ward is a good dude. Man, they gotta hurry up and end this lockout. Now 5-0 is going after all the fine, upstanding NFL dudes. Sounds like he might have put himself in a bad situation, sitting in a stolen car with a woman that might not have been his wife though....

don't be pissed at the cops for doing their job - if the woman would have called to say she had her car it wouldn't have happened - if they hadn't pulled it over, she'd sue them for not doing their job - get a grip woman!

He had probably been drinking, and his lady friend drove him home. Sounds responsible to me...

Wait--he was only the passenger, yet HE was the one handcuffed and held at gunpoint? Logic and police practice would suggest the DRIVER of the "stolen" vehicle should be the one facing such aggressive treatment.

Nothing's changed with the L.A.P.D. and now even riding while Black can be hazardous to your health.

Truth

THE WOMAN WAS A HOOKER. HINES WARD WAS TRYING TO ACT INCONSPICUOUS BY RIDING IN A CHEAP AZZ RIDE INSTEAD OF AN EXPENSIVE CAR IN WHICH HE WOULD GET NOTICED AS A THE DRIVER. BUT A BLACK DUDE IN A HONDA GETS STOPPED ALL THE TIME BY THE PO-PO. HINES WAS LUCKY. HE WAS ONLY HALF-STOPPED SINCE HE'S ONLY HALF-BLACK AND WAS ALLOWED TO LEAVE. OHHHH, TRUTH!!!
