Jimi Hendrix -- The 40 Year Battle for His Music

5/5/2011 5:49 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

When Jimi Hendrix took the stage at London's Royal Albert Hall back in 1969 ... bet he didn't think his family would be in a nasty legal war over the performance 42 years later.

0505_jimi_hendrix_getty_ex

TMZ has obtained a lawsuit, filed by the Hendrix Estate -- in which Jimi's family claims they are the rightful owners of several sound recordings from two concerts at the R.A.H. in 1969 ... despite another cooperation laying claim to the material.

According to the suit, Jimi signed an agreement with the people who recorded the music way back when ... an agreement which would have given them the right to use the music in a motion picture.

But Jimi died ... and the movie was never made ... and for the last 40-years, Jimi's estate and the corporation have been arguing about which side truly owns the rights to the recordings.

Now, the people who run Jimi's estate want to end the battle once and for all ... asking a judge to deem them the rightful owners ... and then force the corporation to pay up more than $2 million in legal costs and other expenses.

... and the wind cried, Mary.

Translation: Gimme $2 million dollars because the royalties for his music suck and nobody is making a Jimi Hendrix movie.

Good Lord. I remember going to the 25 yr anniversary of Woodstock and his daughter got on stage and spoke about how they couldn't play his music. That was 1994. Thank You TMZ for reminding me how old I am.

Actually, Jimi Hendrix is one of the most profitable "dead celebrities". He ranks right up there with Elvis & John Lennon in money earned each year. The reason a movie hasn't been made about him is because of all of the lawsuits floating around, not because of lack of interest.

First off, TMZ you should really consider hiring one of your fellow TMZ readers to help you proof read your stories because obviosuly they're better at catching spelling/grammar errors than you are (it's corporation not cooperation)

Secondly, I can't believe they wasted 40 years over this. Just give the family the money and the rights to the music. They never made the movie and it doesn't look like they're going to anytime soon. Jimi made the music, so it should go to the family.

Pigs N Zen is correct. Not only is Janie a money grubbing B**%T, as soon as she got the big payout she left her husband (a truly great guy and serious musician) for a much younger man. Her true colors came out and she continues to laugh all the way to the bank.

How is Leon... high school drop out, druggie, children in and out of jail, sell out of his stake in the company to russian mob lords; the rightful owner to the company?

This is unfortunate that someone would minipulate a deal with Jimi 42 years ago and when the estate tries to release it, this is what is broadcasted.
