'Gatsby' Producers Drop $$$ On Restored 1920s Cars

5/10/2011 12:30 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Leo DiCaprio will be rolling around the set of "The Great Gatsby" in several authentic, restored cars from the 1920s ... and TMZ has learned producers dropped a TON of cash to make sure they got the real deal.

Sources connected to the production tell us ... filmmakers went to the Volo Auto Museum in Illinois last week and BOUGHT a pair of 1929 Duesenbergs and a 1929 Packard -- both intended to be used by DiCaprio's character, Jay Gatsby.

TMZ spoke to a rep from Volo who tells us three cars are valued at anywhere from $800 thousand to $3 MILLION each -- but the rep wouldn't reveal how much cash producers plunked down for the rides.

We're told the cars are scheduled to be shipped out to the movie set in Australia in the next few weeks.

Fun Fact: 'The Great Gatsby' takes place during the summer of 1922 ... so, technically, these cars weren't even on the roads yet ... but they're still cool.

3D??? It's not a movie made for that. Most of the action takes place in the rooms of a mansion. FAIL # 1.....That is one of my all time favorite movies, the music, everything.

Why, and who, picked Dicaprio for this film? He is the worst actor out there with his little boy voice--he manages to make every role he takes seem silly and amateurish. Have you ever had to sit through Dicaprio in "The Man in the Iron Mask"? My god, talk about hell. He'll ruin this classic book to film as well.

Someone explain why they have a WRITER"S GUILD? It seems to me that the writer's are becoming less and less in original talent and going after old flicks to remake them.

What's next, they remake the two biggest films of Cecile B. Demille?

Geez, original script anyone?

Never gonna bother seeing this movie. No "new" cast could EVER top the original, and I cannot even begin to imagine how ANYONE could think Leonardo DiCaprio could possibly offer to a character only Robert Redford could bring to life. What a waste of money and film.

Never like Leo until I saw "The Departed" if you've not seen it? Do yourself a favor and do so.

Also, Blood Diamond...another good one.

All the others? Nah, I can do without seeing them ever again.

Why are they remaking "Gatsby" in, of all places, Australia? It's supposed to be cheaper to film there, and, besides, the house that inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald to write the original novel was torn down recently...or don't y'all watch the news? The owner of the property said he couldn't afford to restore it, and, in its place, will be several single-family homes in the several figures...do the math.

I mean..if you're going to spend all that money on cars..why not get some from 1922 or before??? Be time conscious! Good lord. I hate when I see movies in 2010 that take place in say, the 80s and Jeep Grand Cherokees from 1998 are hanging out in the street...or movies that take place in NYC circa 70s/80s and cabs from today are driving around...wtf?

Volo are known crooks. They routinely sell replicas and claim they are original or authentic"

TMZ, this is the third story you have run about Volo Museum and rico is right, the owners of volo are known crooks. They ripped me off big time!!

BTW, Volo Museum is not a museum, they are a used car lot that sells cars on consignment. They are also not in Chicago, but in Volo. Ill. 50 miles north.

Jesus TMZ, check your facts before you post a story!
