NHL Player Found Dead

5/14/2011 6:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Derek Boogaard, who appeared in 45 games this season for the New York Rangers, was found dead in his apartment in Minneapolis on Friday. He was 28.

Boogaard, who had a reputation as a tough player, missed the last 52 games of the regular season after suffering a concussion and shoulder injury, but it's too early to know if that had anything to do with his death.

The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine cause of death.

Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather released a statement saying, "Derek was an extremely kind and caring individual. He was a very thoughtful person, who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time."

The NY Rangers have lost a defender of the faithful.

Hockey Enforcers are the police of the rink and "Noble knights".They deal out punishment to the goons of the opposing team.From cheap shots to hard hits "tough guys" help to keep the game in *check*...

He had a concussion while playing hockey for the Rangers which caused him to miss most of the season. Maybe his death is somehow related to that? RIP, Derek Boogaard.

A lot of concussions this season in the NHL. One of the best and most exciting players, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, missed most of the season with one. Unless and until the rules (suspensions and fines) are changed to properly address those players who cause severe head injuries, this trend will continue.

i couldnt agree more you said it all

What's up with all these producers, ballers and other celebs or near celebs turning up dead around the same time. This is creepy.

Not into sports but my condolences to his family. He was only 28 years old. Just staring to live his life. So sad.

this is awful if its due to the concussion. NHL has some big problems right now if players are dying because of concussions. Not sure what the answer is.

==================
Jim, I think the answer is better padding and stronger helmets.The biggest thing is NOT rushing the injured player back into the game.
In the old days we would just shake out "the cobwebs" and go back out there creating a huge risk of multiple concussions and permanent brain damage.
Similar to soldiers injured by roadside bombs in war the brain needs time to heal and they should not return to the battle too soon..
