Dr. Drew -- Conaway Did NOT Die From an Overdose

5/27/2011 2:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Despite widespread reports, "Grease" star Jeff Conaway did NOT die from a drug overdose -- but rather his body gave out after long-term prescription drug abuse ... this according to Dr. Drew.

Drew -- who treated Conaway on "Celebrity Rehab" -- tells us there is no evidence showing Jeff died from an overdose ... saying, "This was aspiration with overwhelming pneumonia and sepsis."

Drew tells us Jeff's condition was inevitable because the actor had been a serious pill popper for years and the constant substance abuse wore down his body.

Drew explains, "Jeff is another pharmaceutical death from the overutilization of prescription drugs. Please continue to pray for friends and family. They appreciate your support.”

Jeff was a stand up guy. We worked together when I was 16 and were friends ever since. Years would go by before we bumped into each other. I hate that now more than anything. He was the kind of guy you could turn to with a problem. A situation of any kind. He picked me up from the airport in the middle of the night, took my cat to the vet when when I was out of town, and took me to Dennys at 2am when I was all broken up over some guy,(Can't remember who now, but choc chip pancakes were involved.) We lived in the same area but often lost touch. I was always real busy. He always had some girl he thought was saving him. I know who they are though I never thought...well, I should have thought. I just can't stand all this stupid gossip. He got hurt. Badly. He needed the drugs. He had a lot of pain. He never whined or complained. He became addicted to drugs, and the people around him were content with that. He owned his problem and never ever blamed anyone else. When I would screw up and hate myself, he'd say " Cut it out baby. We do the best we can with the tools we have at the time." To cut off someone's head to make yourself taller...well then shame on only you. Shame on me for not being there. Sorry budster. I still can't sing that song right. I love you
