Diabetes Group to Steve-O: Don't Hate on Meat!

6/1/2011 3:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The American Diabetes Association wants to teach Steve-O a lesson ... after he BOYCOTTED a diabetes benefit for serving meat -- telling TMZ, eating animal flesh isn't necessarily bad for diabetics.

0531_ada_steve_o_ex_tmz

As we previously reported, Steve-O walked out on an ADA benefit when he found out meat was on the menu -- claiming serving meat at a diabetes fundraiser is "like serving alcohol at an AA meeting."

But a rep for the ADA tells us, there is no rule that you can’t eat meat if you have diabetes -- every person is different, and should be on a meal plan that works best for them.

0531_steveo_boycott_mini_vid_launchThat said, the ADA still welcomes Steve-O at their events with open arms -- telling us, "The doors are always open."

I'm a DNE, & mom to a Type 1 diabetic child.
How can so many people be so stupid??!! I'm more afraid of the fact that my son might contract idiocy from the people around him than I am of him having some much needed protein once in awhile.

He's wrong. There's nothing inherently wrong with meat diet-wise. The amount of meat available and its price is a product of 20th century advances in farming and processing. But many people eat too much meat, particularly red meat, and often processed meat, with added salt and sugars, on top of the natural saturated fats. And not enough fruit, fibre, and fresh vegetables. The negative issues with over-consumption of meat and dairy are well do***ented. The amount of meat we consume now, on average, is beyond recognition when compared with just decades ago. Because of these, very 20th/21st century, health problems people use it as an argument for veganism. When actually it's a problem of over consumption rather than anything inherently wrong with meat. I'm not a vegetarian, or diabetic, but try to limit meat in my diet and avoid processed meats. He's using the same reasoning people use against vegetarian diets (“some vegetarian diets are bad therefore all vegetarian diets are bad” is not that different from “some meat diets are bad therefore all meat diets are bad”). Stupid. He seems to be confusing the American Diabetes Association with a fast food chain selling half the daily calorific intake, but little of the nutrition, in one supersized meal. Big difference.

the ONLY thing that matters to a diabetic is the glucose (and to a certain extent, the type of carbohydrate - simple or complex). The only meat that (naturally) has even a dab of carbohydrate is shellfish. Fat doesn't matter. ONLY carbohydrates.

Now, however, if ALL you are eating is protein and you are eating beyond your body's protein needs (which is A LOT of protein - way more than the average person eats each day), there is the possibility of gluconeogenesis. This is EXTREMELY unlikely to occur.

The fact that protein is so necessary and that too much CARBOHYDRATES contribute to insulin resistance and, ultimately, diabetes is yet another bit of evidence that humans are evolutionarily meant to be eating meat.

Steve O maybe has carnivores mixed with diabetics. However, meat has so many hormones pumped in it, a diabetic person can gain weight eating it then die of obesity.

he is standing up for what he believes in. he didn't seem rude in the video, looks like he just walked out. i don't see anything wrong with it; maybe next year they will put out more food options though.
steve-o (& harvey) have it right. as we learned in "HALLOWEEN RESURRECTION", "Never underestimate the effect of a poor diet. Too much protein, not enough zinc. Next thing you know, you're cutting up bodies in the bathtub. I mean, look at Hitler. He was a vegetarian. The brother (MYERS) was seriously malnourished."

I had two great aunts that were insulin shot dependent diabetics and they loved them some meat. (My one aunt loved her t-bone steaks)

One lived to be 96 years old... one is still living and she turned 97 a few months ago.

There is no scientific evidence to say that a vegetarian is healthier than a person who has meat in their diet.

he's dead WRONG on saying meat is bad for diabetics. Its about lowering sugar and fat and bad carbs and cleaning up your diet. Yes, clean vegatarian diets have helped diabetics, but, its not a a must to end meat eating. Even eating small portions of meat is fine for diabetics as long as you clean up the rest of your diet.
He's making drama for nothing and does not know what he's talking about.

OMG he is a MORON!!!!!!!!! As a type 1 diabetic since childhood, I can say that meat is absolutely one of the best things a diabetic can eat, unfortunately, but truly. This is how it works...it's NOT HARD TO UNDERSTAND! Your body uses carbs for energy, when you have diabetes, your body doesn't produce enough insulin (which is the hormone that transports the carbs as energy, from your blood into your body cells) so the energy becomes wasted as it's trapped in your blood. Changing your diet, adding insulin, and exercise correct the problem. Foods LOW in carbs like MEAT, eggs, vegetables, and cheeses are ideal because they don't raise your blood sugar. Simple.

And thats the truth

Disturbed 9 hours ago It's always funny when former drug addicts become clean and suddenly seem to care what they put in their body - Steve-O became a vegetarian or vegan, and 2 years ago he was so blitzed out of his mind on pills and from huffing fumes, he couldn't even tell you his name.
All for saving the animals, but come on Steve, PUT IT IN PERSPECTIVE man. Diabetics have issues with SUGAR. Not protein.
You had an opportunity to raise funds for a good cause and blew it because you didn't understand? That sucks. Do some vegans campaigns to balance it out and call it a day.
****************************************************************

Actually it is not really about sugar, it is more carbohydrates, which turns into sugar once it is metabolized in the body. A person with type 2 diabetes can eat a cookie or cake etc. just like everyone else, but they need to eat it about 2 or 3 hours after they have their regular meal.

A meal for a diabetic should be no more then 30 - 35 carbs. Meat, cheese and eggs have no carbs so therefore it is ok to eat them. Stevo-O is just trying to get some attention. Why was he there if he does not even have it?

Holistic doctors have been reversing type 2 diabetes for years. Losing weight will reverse it in 90% of diabetes cases. I know this because I did it myself without the help of any meds.

Umm...what the heck is he talking about?! My daughter is a type 1 diabetic and as anyone who lives with this disease knows, CARBS (pasta, bread, rice, sweets,etc...) are what raises blood sugar and meat, unless in a sugar containing sauce or gravy, doesn't have any carbs. Steve-O is an idiot and his comments don't even make sense. Meat (or poulty/fish) is the mosy sensible dish to serve at an ADA event.

morons! this is why I get so pissed off at agenda-seeking editorials that skew the original message to sway public opinion!! a barrage of haters jump on top of this guy because TMZ just reported that Steve-O stated "serving meat at a diabetes fundraiser is "like serving alcohol at an AA meeting." He DID say that but what was omitted was the fact that he thought that the event was to promote a plant-based diet in treating diabetes!!! If you are going to have an event to teach people about removing meat products from a diabetic's diet and then you have meat on the menue, then Steve-o comment is pretty accurate!! If you omit that 'plant-based' portion of his statement then you are taking the quote way out of context and making him look like the bad guy. Very poor, agenda-seeking, drama-creating reporting. And most of you folks fell for it. Idiots!!
