Diabetes Group to Steve-O: Don't Hate on Meat!

6/1/2011 3:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The American Diabetes Association wants to teach Steve-O a lesson ... after he BOYCOTTED a diabetes benefit for serving meat -- telling TMZ, eating animal flesh isn't necessarily bad for diabetics.

As we previously reported, Steve-O walked out on an ADA benefit when he found out meat was on the menu -- claiming serving meat at a diabetes fundraiser is "like serving alcohol at an AA meeting."

But a rep for the ADA tells us, there is no rule that you can’t eat meat if you have diabetes -- every person is different, and should be on a meal plan that works best for them.

0531_steveo_boycott_mini_vid_launchThat said, the ADA still welcomes Steve-O at their events with open arms -- telling us, "The doors are always open."

He is an idiot, just trying to get back in the spotlight. I've been a diabetic for over 20 years and I eat meat. He should do some research before opening his mouth.

"According to the American Dietetic Association, Steve-O is right—there is strong evidence that a vegetarian diet can help prevent and treat diabetes. A study co-authored by Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine found that many type 2 diabetics were able to drastically reduce and even eliminate their medications after they switched to a low-fat vegan diet."

Nitwits ... of course a healthy diet helps with Type 2 Diabetes but it's not the meat. It's the calories and fat. No doubt a plant based diet would help - but no more so than an equally healthy, lower calorie and lower fat based diet including lean meat. It (any diet) cannot, under ANY cir***stance, reverse Type 1 Diabetes and, I hope, his handlers and PR people have learned that by now.

if he only knew how good meat truly is for diabetes, clearly this guy has never heard of the paleo diet and how it REVERSES type one diabetes, all i can say is wow!

Animals eat other animals? That's your argument? You know, on one hand we're not like animals because we are cognitively superior (supposedly), and on the other hand we're supposed to eat other animals because that's what they do. I can't decide which belief animal exploiters actually hold. Frankly, it doesn't matter. We don't derive our ethics from the behavior of free-living animals. We derive it from understanding what is right and what is wrong.

And we know now that we have no justification for killing 56 billion animals for our benefit every year (not counting the uncountably high number of marine animals) because a) it's wrong to harm sentient animals unnecessarily, b) animals used for food (and clothing, and entertainment) are sentient, c) animals used for our benefit are harmed in all but the most incredible cir***stances, and d) it's unnecessary to use animals (i. we don't need to eat them to survive, ii. we don't *need* to use them to clothe ourselves or look good, and iii. we don't need to use them in order to entertain ourselves).

@ Ed s.

It needs to be stated that nothing, absolutely nothing, especially diet can reverse Type 1 Diabetes. I can't tell if people are confused about the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 but I can guarantee that there is no cure nor means for reversal of the autoimmune disease of Type 1 Diabetes.

I'll say it again just in case:

There is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes. There is no means for reversal for Type 1 Diabetes. The only therapy is insulin which is needed to facilitate the absorption of glucose which is created during the digestion of carbohydrates.

Despite many of these rocket scientists claims, there is a link between diabetes and meat consumption:
You should be ashamed that Steve-O is smarter than you! Haha!

"He is an idiot, just trying to get back in the spotlight. I've been a diabetic for over 20 years and I eat meat. He should do some research before opening his mouth."
This statement is HILARIOUS! You kind of provided evidence of his point...its no surprise that you have diabetes and eat meat! Hahaha! How about this, EVERYONE in y family has diabetes EXCEPT me! The only real difference is that I'm vegan and the rest of my family are not. My grandmother just lost her leg due to diabetes complications...her doctors have since prescribed a PLANT BASED diet! Once again, you all should be embarrassed that Steve-O is better informed than you!

Check out this Forks Over Knives video from diabetes researcher Dr. Neal Barnard.

It's not about a vegan agenda, it's about the persuasive evidence that animal-based foods are a main culprit in our worst degenerative diseases. Steve-O and others want less suffering in the world--what's wrong with that?

This video is nothing more than a shameless MD using diabetes as a scare tactic to further his agenda. The studies he mentions are old and there are many more than contradict them. The link between meat or milk and diabetes is questionable at best. Once again, a healthy diet is good for everyone, especially Type 2 diabetics, but meat is not the culprit - it over consumption in general and a lack of a balanced, low-fat (not fat free) diet. Regardless, no diet will reverse or prevent Type 1 Diabetes and that's a fact.

My daughter is diabetic and meat and vegetables are the only things she can eat without having to take thankfully there is such a thing as meat or this poor kid would have to be injecting herself with insulin more often than she needs to. He's an idiot. Meat is great for least my daughter.

i know the difference in type 1 and 2 diabetes, it is in my family. If you do some research people HAVE reversed type 1 with the paleo diet, now granted those are the people who have had type 2 and it formed into type 1, so i agree if you are born with type 1 yes un curable, if it is caused by diet and other lifestyle faults yes diet can fix type 1.

You obviously don't know the difference and perhaps it is you that needs to do their research. There is no "Type 2 than formed into Type 1". They are two completely different diseases with two completely different causes. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease that is caused by the immune system attacking and permanently killing the Beta Cells in the pancreas. Nothing can bring those cells back and, if you could (which you can't), the immune system would kill them again. There is no cure - only therapy.

Perhaps you mean someone with Type 2 that used to be able to control it with pills had to progress to insulin? That entirely possible but it's still Type 2 and not Type 1.

I agree that a healthy diet *can* help Type 2 diabetics and it very well may help them to reduce or stop using insulin altogether. I still maintain that it's not the meat but the overall diet that's the problem.

In case anyone cares, it's misinformation like what Steve-O and his followers are obviously confused with about Type 1, that gets people so ticked off. We have children who, through no fault of diet or otherwise, have been afflicted with an incurable autoimmune disease and the comments that he made are lumped together with Type 1 diabetics and the public is left with the misconception that a simple diet will cure them. I mean, damn, who's going to give money to JDRF who funds millions in research for a cure for Type 1 when people think all they need to do is stop eating hamburgers?

tell all those people who have type 1 diabetes who have used the paleo diet and successfully ended any need of insulin shots that it does not work.
