'X Factor' to Cheryl Cole: For Money, Not Love

6/5/2011 5:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Sources at "X Factor" tell TMZ ... FOX and Fremantle (the producers of the show) are trying to get Cheryl Cole back on the program, a week after giving her her walking papers ... but it's more about the bottom line than about loving Cheryl.

Our sources say when producers told Cheryl she wasnt right for the U.S. version of "X Factor," they tried to put her on the UK version of the show. Cheryl's managers wanted £2.5 million and producers thought it was too much, so the deal went south.

We're told Cheryl was due to get paid around $1.5 million for the U.S. show -- about what Paula Abdul and LA Reid are making -- but she has not decided whether to accept and come back.

The whole situation becomes even messier when you take into account Nicole Scherzinger -- who was originally hired as a host, but was moved to being a judge when Cheryl was axed. Her position on the show now seems to be up in the air.

Our sources say Cheryl's deal with the U.S version is "pay or play" -- meaning she gets paid whether she does the show or not. We're told execs at FOX -- and especially at Fremantle -- dont want to lose the money ... so it's better to have her on the show than not.

I have a question for the British people who visit and read these comments, DO you understand the American accent?

something sounds fishy as this would be one of the most idiotic moves ever. Let someone go that you have to pay no matter what. That doesn't even make any sense.

I wonder if this is all a Cowell ploy to raise the drama level for the US version of X-factor.

Publicity stunt! 1-2 million is peanuts for Fox. Simon and company are getting desperate to drum up interest in his tired show. XFactor fatigue has set in and I could care less about Cheryl Cole. Sick of reading about her and Simon. The Voice and American Idol don't have to pull stunts for viewers.

So Simon Cowell and the whole SyCo machine pulled this whole publicity stunt to make America know who Greedy Tweedy is.

Great, that means America is welcome to more Gamu saga's and rigging the show by Simon in favor of Tweedy....smh

Maybe they did it so that the public wouldn't care that she is a raging racist since she was arrested for beating a black bathroom attendant for just no reason. Publicity stunt. Americans don't like racists.....

Wow what a publicity move from Simon. She was probably never sacked in the first place, this supposed "re-hiring" is a publicity stunt to get her name out there and attract attention to the show.

@Soccer Fan No one heard Cheryl using racist language when she assaulted that bathroom attendant, the club manager and the attendant said Cheryl said those things after the fact. Cheryl was hardly famous when that happened, why would everyone that witnessed it lie about that? And another thing, as far as we've heard, Cheryl hasn't laid a hand on anyone since then. The way the tabs love tearing stars down, we would have heard about it if Cheryl had hit anyone in the ten years since her last assault.

Her deal was not pay or play. The end result would have looked like it was.

Because she was fired she had a strong case to be paid anyway.
The producers were advised that would likely be the outcome.
Facing that reality cooler heads have asked her back.
