Victory for Gay Cop

at Gay Pride Parade!

6/7/2011 5:46 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Gloria Allred knows how to get results.  The California Department of Corrections has just folded like a cheap suit and will now allow a gay corrections officer to march in uniform in Sunday's West Hollywood Gay Pride Parade.

Officer Andrew Johnson and Allred held a news conference today and filed a complaint, alleging the Department was guilty of discrimination based on sexual orientation when it refused to allow Johnson to march in uniform, on grounds it would be a "discredit" to the Department.

The Department now says, "CDCR acknowledges that [its policy] is outdated and requires careful revision.  Therefore, Correctional Officer Andrew Johnson will be allowed to wear the CDCR uniform in the upcoming Gay Pride Parade..."

Don't come crying to us when your prisoners accuse you of being bias. That uniform is worn to respect and protect everyone, now it is just sick.

I don't believe him if he says he is a proud gay because all you would need is to have yourself at the parade.

I guess the system is running like a biotch and scared Gladd might demand paid fines. It does not make people any more tolerant of you, nor like your life style.

I hope the REAL policemen will not hesitate to arrest any participant who feels free to be half naked and get close and cozy with another in our streets........the streets where children are constantly. One faqqot word said at a ball game and so many pretended to be concerned about our children, yet you rub this crap in our faces.

@Johnathan - - Sorry, but Screws do not have the authority to arrest, unless a citizen's arrest, which we all have.

NOT A COP!

Looks like TMZ has turned into a gay rights website because of Harvey Levin's lifestyle.

I remember the good ol' days when TMZ reported celebrity gossip, not local news.

Looks like I've got to find another gossip site. I guess I'll give Radar Online a try for a while. Maybe AOL will see the light and get rid of Harvey soon.

@The Neko Nation,

The CDCR had no choice - they either caved in or faced lawsuits and $$$$ lost. Plus it would set a precedent. Case law usually does.

They have done the best they can under the cir****tances and will make sure, in the future, that their Operations Manual is more explicit, leaving nothing to interpretation.

Freedom of expression is content-free: you've got the right to say it (or write it or wear it), no matter what the particular message. It's the unpopular or minority messages that need the right to free expression.

I can understand people's concern about a uniform being worn when the person isn't on duty, but that's the current law to allow it. People march in parades wearing uniforms even when not on duty. Maybe there's an exception for military personnel, although they wear uniforms on leave, don't they (sailors in bars, etc.). This fellow just wants the same rights as other uniformed public servants. If it's a bad idea, then change the law for everyone!

Nice work Gloria and Jonathan! It's a small but nevertheless important step towards equal rights for everyone.
In another 30 years we'll be looking back in shock and disgust at how very ignorant and narrow-minded people were.

Well, I don't think they will fire him, not without cause. On the other hand, perhaps a summer or two at Ironwood, would change his outlook on a few things.

Trust me, everything he does from now on will be carefully and completely do***ented.

It's a litigious world we live in and you have to protect yourself. State agencies are no exception.

This corrections officer looks like Scott Peterson. I can't look at him without getting the creeps and it has nothing to do with his sexuality.
