Gay Cop

Fights for Right

to March in Uniform

6/7/2011 10:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A gay correctional officer is outraged that his department thinks marching in uniform in the West Hollywood gay pride parade is a "discredit" to the department ... and he's taking legal action to fight for his rights.

Andrew Johnson works as a correctional officer for the California Institution for Women in Chino, CA.  He's also a member of the Gay Peace Officers Association.  Johnson asked his superiors at the Department of Corrections for permission to march in uniform on Sunday, but was told he couldn't do it because of a law that prohibits officers from marching in uniform if it would bring "discredit" to the department.

Johnson's lawyer, Gloria Allred, said at a news conference that other departments -- including the LAPD, L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the CHP -- allow officers to march in uniform in the parade.

Allred says the Department of Corrections allows officers to march in uniform in other parades, including the Christmas parade and the Carrot Festival.

Allred says she's filed a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, alleging discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Allred wouldn't let Johnson speak, because of fear of retaliation.

She wants the warden to reverse his position so Johnson can march.

First of all, did you choose to be hetero? I'm going to assume your answer is "no". Well, here's no surprise: I didn't choose to be gay. I don't need to prove it, it's just there. Just like you don't need to prove it because it just is there.

Second of all, I am not saying you can't believe what you want but don't go shoving it down other's throats. You can believe in what fantasy you want but the fact remains: NO ONE CHOSES WHAT GENDER THEY ARE ATTRACTED TO.

Third of all, who would choose to be gay? Who would choose to potentially loose their family and friends? Who would choose to be persecuted like this? Who would choose to be hated and discriminated against?

Fourth of all it's not "special right" or "privileges" it's protection from you homophobic bigots and your anti-gay agenda trying to destroy this world. If you bastards would leave us alone and stop beating the crap out of us and murdering us for how God created us then we wouldn't need gay rights. Gay rights are civil rights.

How are his rights being violated? His employment is not being threatened? He is not being denied the right to march.

He simply wasn't given permission to march in his uniform at an event that was a personal interest to him.

Unlike Christmas or Carrot parades, Gay Pride has a political under current.

Should a police officer who opposes abortion be allowed to protest at a Pro-Life rally in uniform?

Christmas has no political undercurrent? You might want to rethink that. Christmas is all about the birth of Christ. So there is no Christian influence going on there? Hmmm some how I doubt that.

You are the first person ever to tell me you choose to be a hetero so I will not listen to your agenda.

You keep living in your little fantasy and I will progress forward.

Gay rights are civil rights you fool. Last I checked we can not get married and some jobs and housing discriminate on sexual orientation. So yes on top of the fact that we didn't choose to be gay, we are being discriminated against so we need protection from you foolish homophobic bigots. Keep telling yourself otherwise and live out your fantasy.

How is it a "right" to wear a uniform?

No one suggested he should be prevented from marching. And other than a few of the usually smart azzes, no one suggested that there is should be shame in being gay.

I resent the implication that I would commit genocide. I do not have the heart nor soul to murder any one, period. Unless of course that person is trying to terminate me.

@OCRedCub

Please try t locate a picture of officers marching in their uniform at the events you mentioned and maybe I will rethink my position.

But my hunch is since Gloria didn't mention them, it didn't happen.

I voted no on Prop. H8. It's sad that the black community voted to take my right to marry away seeing as they should know how it feels to take that right away from them. Come on, we all know that most African-Americans voted Yes on Prop H8 only because most of them are Christians and the Christian-right has an anti-gay agenda. Mystery solved. This isn't about rights to you bigots, it's about you spreading and legitimizing your anti-gay agenda.

THE OFFICER SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO MARCH IN UNIFORM.

Comparing it to a Christmas Parade, or even a Carrot Parade, is unfair. If it were the Christian Pride parade (or God forbid, Caucasian Pride), Gloria would have a fit if uniformed officers were allowed to march in it.

I side with the corrections institution. This is a waste of the court's time. The guy can march in civilian clothing, NOT A UNIFORM.

i get so sick of all of these gay people thinking they should get to do things that the rest of us can't do. We can't wear OUR WORK UNIFORM to parades because it is simply that: A WORK UNIFORM!!! If he wants to wear a uniform, go to a halloween store and buy a play uniform. It is actually AGAINST THE LAW TO REPRESENT ONESELF AS AN OFFICER OF THE LAW WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTUALLY WORKING ON THE CLOCK OR IN THE PROCESS OF AN ARREST OR LEGAL PROCEEDING. Last time I looked, the gay pride parade was just that, a gay pride parade. I hope you guys never get marriage passed. I'm so sick of gays wanting equal rights. In the end, it is not right.

How stupid could this gay guy be? And how utterly stupid could gloria assred be? Bottom line is: A work uniform is just that: IT IS A WORK UNIFORM. It isn't for Halloween parties or gay pride parades, it is a WORK UNIFORM. And there is nothing in the law that will help you here. Assred is doing nothing more than taking this chumps money so she can get some more notariety.

Fascist? Are you actually listening to yourself?

As much as you want to huff and puff, it's not a "right" to wear government issued uniform at your leisure. Rules and protocol for doing so are ALREADY in place, despite you huffing and puffing about it.

Could someone wear a their police uniform to a National Socialist Rally if they wanted to?
