Gay Cop

Fights for Right

to March in Uniform

6/7/2011 10:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A gay correctional officer is outraged that his department thinks marching in uniform in the West Hollywood gay pride parade is a "discredit" to the department ... and he's taking legal action to fight for his rights.

Andrew Johnson works as a correctional officer for the California Institution for Women in Chino, CA.  He's also a member of the Gay Peace Officers Association.  Johnson asked his superiors at the Department of Corrections for permission to march in uniform on Sunday, but was told he couldn't do it because of a law that prohibits officers from marching in uniform if it would bring "discredit" to the department.

Johnson's lawyer, Gloria Allred, said at a news conference that other departments -- including the LAPD, L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the CHP -- allow officers to march in uniform in the parade.

Allred says the Department of Corrections allows officers to march in uniform in other parades, including the Christmas parade and the Carrot Festival.

Allred says she's filed a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, alleging discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Allred wouldn't let Johnson speak, because of fear of retaliation.

She wants the warden to reverse his position so Johnson can march.

Personally, I think it's a "choice", much like an acquired taste. Take Coke and Pepsi for instance, if only one of the brands was ever offered there wouldn't be a reason to CHOOSE and debate whether it's OK to drink one or the other.

This lifestyle has crept into our society and is very quickly chipping away at the resistance that is within everyone when it comes to this topic. After so much loud music, you learn to tolerate part of it for your own sanity.....

It seems that YOU ARE ROGUE. Did you choose to be a hetero? I sure as hell didn't choose to be gay. Gay people have been here since the dawn of time and will always be here. You don't like it, then get the hell out of the galaxy.

It amazes me that there is so much homophobia here. He want to wear his uniform because he is PROUD of his job and wants to show others that they should NOT be ashamed to be gay.

If LAPD and other departments are allowed to wear their uniforms in the parade I do not see the problem here. It is discrimination plain and simple.

All you bible bashers should be ashamed of yourselves. This is 2011, not the middle ages. You're not helping the human race to move forward.

If you can march in uniform to other parades you should be able to march in uniform in the gay pride parade. Folks on here are hating other people because of who they are. Be free and let folks live they way they want and calm down already

just read that the Dept. of Corrections caved in because the language was "ambiguous" in their Operations Manual. Bet it's changed by Monday.

BTW - GPOO is listed in the phone book as a "club".

I have no problem with him marching in the parade, but I don't think he should do it in uniform. I don't think any police officer should wear his uniform unless in an official capacity. They don't wear them to bars, they don't wear them to church. they don't wear them to night clubs. They should only be worn on the job, or official police functions.

Stop being a smartazz, there is a difference between a gay pride parade and a KKK parade or Nazi parade. Or are you stupid and ignorant to comprehend this fact?

Stop putting words in my mouth. I never said I wanted to kill any one. I don't have the heart nor soul to murder any one. I think it's you who wants that.
