Gay Cop

Fights for Right

to March in Uniform

6/7/2011 10:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A gay correctional officer is outraged that his department thinks marching in uniform in the West Hollywood gay pride parade is a "discredit" to the department ... and he's taking legal action to fight for his rights.

Andrew Johnson works as a correctional officer for the California Institution for Women in Chino, CA.  He's also a member of the Gay Peace Officers Association.  Johnson asked his superiors at the Department of Corrections for permission to march in uniform on Sunday, but was told he couldn't do it because of a law that prohibits officers from marching in uniform if it would bring "discredit" to the department.

Johnson's lawyer, Gloria Allred, said at a news conference that other departments -- including the LAPD, L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the CHP -- allow officers to march in uniform in the parade.

Allred says the Department of Corrections allows officers to march in uniform in other parades, including the Christmas parade and the Carrot Festival.

Allred says she's filed a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, alleging discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Allred wouldn't let Johnson speak, because of fear of retaliation.

She wants the warden to reverse his position so Johnson can march.

The moment Allred gets involved in anything, all credibility goes down the drain. She's a joke and should be disbarred. Moron.

As for him marching in the uniform, well, that's up to his employer, isn't it. Would they allow him to walk in a Westboro Baptist Parade? A White Supremist Parade? I doubt it. He hasn't been fired from his job, has he? He should be grateful he has a job in this economy.

Some of you folks may not like seeing officers in uniform in a civil rights parade, but it is allowed. LAPD and L.A. Sheriff's officers have marched in previous parades. People march in all kinds of parades in uniform; Rose Parade has the whole Marine band!

Is there some reason why a prison guard should not be permitted to (he's at a women's prison)? The warden made a personal bad judgement call here and will back down pronto.

He lost all credibility to me when he hooked up with Gloria Alred.

Now he looks like he's a frivilous troublemakler just trying to p*ss people off.

I guess gay men were "born" pursing their lips, talking with the lisp, batting their eyelids gently, twitching their tushies, and cornholing every male that moves? Um, sorry, but the "born that way" theory is simply a joke! The behavior is learned.

I thought service uniforms were only to be worn on the job, or in representing their department. Will he be marching on behalf of the Dept. of Corrections? If not, than he should not be in uniform.

GPOA Members are marching in this parade as a group. The marching members are also all in uniform, representing many different localities and departments. His "Warden" should have said "You have permission".

Just more of the "alternate lifestyle" pushing its agenda on everyone else. They just can't seem to want to fit in.

Everybody already knows he is gay so who cares if he wears a uniform. Sounds like they have something against gay people. He wears that uniform to work and they know he is gay so what's the difference. Last I knew this is suppose to be the land of the free!

Of course he should be allowed. The whole point is that the department decided that this event would discredit the uniform. Not that officers are not allowed to wear their uniforms to events like parades ect. Either officers should or should not be allowed to wear their uniforms to events/parades of ANY kind or not.. the department should not be allowed to decide if an event is a 'discredit' or not.

My comment has nothing to do with him being gay. I seriously don't care one way or another, but if he is not on the clock, he should not be wearing his uniform.

Uh, Mr. Johnson, you've pretty well screwed yourself in the eyes of your fellow comrades. Whereas I believe in equality for all, you have pushed past equality and made yourself look like the primadona you are! I'd be looking for another job, matey!
