Tina Fey

Tracy's Rant Was 'Violent,' 'Disturbing'

6/10/2011 5:15 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Tina Fey says she was disturbed by the "violent imagery" in Tracy Morgan's homophobic stand-up act in Nashville -- but insists her "30 Rock" co-star is not a "hateful man."

In a statement to TMZ, Tina said she's glad Tracy apologized -- but explained, "The violent imagery of Tracy's rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT Community."

Fey continued, "It also doesn't line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person.

"I hope for his sake that Tracy's apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian co-workers at '30 Rock', without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket."

NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt claims the network has warned Morgan about the incident -- saying, "Tracy’s comments reflect negatively on both '30 Rock' and NBC – two very all-inclusive and diverse organizations – and we have made it clear to him that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated."

Honestly, is Tracy Morgan funny? You see him on David Letterman and it is ALWAYS so awkward for Dave. Tracy is just random, and honestly not funny. Can his ass, put him out on the street, see how he likes it.

This has nothing to do with free speech and the First Amendment. The government isn't trying to stifle Morgab's speech. And, even where governments are concerned, free speech isn't absolute, for good reason.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Gitlow vs. NY established that this also applies to state and local governments as well.

And, hate speech isn't the same as an offensive joke.

Tina Fey has to realize that this IS the Tracy Morgan she knows -- he's just kept it hidden from her.

Tina Fey is attempting to brush this under the carpet. Morgan's psychopathic gay-bashing outburst did not come out of the blue. He has for years been growing steadily worse with his gay-bashing. For a parent to tell a cheering live theater audience that if his son were to grow up to become conspicuously gay, he would take out a knife and stab him until he is dead is absolutely chilling. What if in fact one or more of Tracy Morgan's children is homosexual? After this, how could a gay child feel safe alone with him? For that matter, how is any child to feel, knowing that their parent would, (for whatever reason) say that they would take out a knife and stab them until they were dead? Tracy Morgan has in other ways raised red flags about whether he has judgment adequate to being left alone with his under-age children. He had a serious drinking problem. He showed extremely bad judgment, with serious negative consequences, in not taking care of himself after being diagnosed with diabetes. He obviously would control the purse strings over his children when they are around him - who knows what bad judgment he is capable of making about their health care needs? Tina Fey is being self-serving in this statement . . obviously co-produced with PR people . . in saying that she hopes the gay co-contributors at 30 Rock will be able to "forgive" Morgan. The damage he has done is immense, and can not be rectified by his co-contributors "forgiving him." That is their meal ticket on a prestigious show. Meanwhile, all of the gay-bashers who cheered Morgan on in Tennessee will continue gay-bashing in their homes, in their schools, at work and on the streets. What is Tina Fey going to do for those victims? Where is her trip to Tennessee arguing in favor of the elimination of this Neanderthal anti-gay bigotry?

Niki -- This has nothing to do with the First Amendment and free speech. The Tennessee Gov't isn't trying to censure Morgan.

what he said sounded like he meant it sincerely. He made his true feelings towards gay people very clear- and people like him are dangerous. Inciting hate and homophobia is not cool.

I don't know why anyone would take what this guy says seriously. It's obvious by the way he talks alone that he's semi-retarded.

I agree that Tina Fey is trying to cover this up a bit too much. I know she is pro LGBT rights, so I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she didn;t need to add the "however/but." This IS the Morgan she knows -- he's just been hiding it from her.

You're right: he is pathological. Very scary.

As a Palin supporter, I didn't like it when he called her a MILF he would like to f$%k but I defended his right to say it. He has gone a bridge too far attacking the PC police's biggest clients, namely gays, and ironically, it is precisely Palin who would come to his defence now more than anyone else.

Defending freedom of speech, especially speech you hate, is what our country is all about.

There are no limits in comedy, look at Family Guy and South Park. First edgy comedy were Polish jokes, blonde jokes and black jokes. Which evolved into political, other ethnic and religious jokes and now gay jokes. Jokes are going to always offend some people with thin skin. If you can't laugh at yourself and take a joke then don'*****ch the show.

However, if someone is just spewing hateful garbage under the umbrella of comedy and not trying to be funny then that's not comedy anyway.

Aside from how unfortunate Mr. Morgan's comments are, my big takeaway from reading internet comments and reactions to his deplorable statement is that people have a drastically inaccurate perception of what the notion of "Freedom of Speech" means. Tracy Morgan was not arrested by the government for his comments. If he had been, that would be a clear violation of his first amendment rights. As this did not occur, and as he has suffered no governmental sanction of any kind regarding his statements, no violation of those rights has occurred. Period. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from criticism. It's a little sad that we have to take time to explain that, but it's something that every American should understand. I also find it deeply ironic that this specious "What about his freedom of speech" argument is being used to try to rebut this criticism. It truly shows the degree to which the first amendment is misinterpreted, usually by people who share Mr. Morgan's sentiments. Agree or disagree with him regarding his content, but the question of his allegedly molested freedom of speech rights is not up for debate.
