Roger Ebert BLASTS Ryan Dunn for Drunk Driving

6/20/2011 11:43 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Ryan Dunn hasn't even been dead for a day yet -- and film critic Roger Ebert is already ripping the late "Jackass" star for boozing before getting behind the wheel  ... tweeting, "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive."

Ryan Dunn Drunk
TMZ broke the story ... Dunn's drinking buddy claims Ryan had at least 3 beers and 3 shots before hitting the road in his Porsche.

Obviously, Ebert has a point -- but we gotta ask ...

If he had been alone in the car, then this would be too soon. Instead, he had a passenger and was out drinking with friends before the crash. You don't have to be legally drunk to have alcohol affect your ability to drive. Even a single drink has been shown to decrease your reaction time. It's sad that he took someone out with him when he made the very jackass-ish decision to drink and then drive.

Ebert's right. Enabler's let enabler's drink and drive. True friendship is a beautiful caring thing.Where people look out for what's best for one another.

Someone just lost their son...it hasn't been said whether or not alcohol was a factor...too soon? yeah your kinda jumping the gun there...wouldn't you feel like a jacka** if he wasn't drunk? This is sad anyway you look at it...a little respect people.

Too soon? Absolutely not!! Its too late! If in fact he was drunk at the time of the accident, he should burn in hell. He took an innocent life and destroyed a nice car and public property. Hope he had good insurance, because his family is gonna get sued big by the other persons family. We all know that drinking and driving is bad, yet people continue to do it. Maybe we need to bring back prohibition in the US to keep idiots from hurting themselves and others.

Brad Brad

Wow..At least have some f***en respect. The man just passed for gods sake!

Curious Curious

Is Ebert ripping Ryan or is he ripping the folks that let Ryan drive after drinking? Seems to me he's ripping the friends of the Jackass star for letting him drive after drinking. Open to interpretation?

alessandra alessandra

That may be the case, But come on the poor guy has not even been dead a day, and the fact that we don't even know his blood level yet, what a ass have a heart

He is right!! And it's not too soon....more people need to hear this before they end up dead or killing an innocent person!!!! There is no excuse, ever for this!!!!!

Mr. DickTurpin Mr. DickTurpin

Ebert is being his usually witty self - his comment makes him sound like a jackass - that's the point - it's an homage to Ryan Dunn. Get it?

Thank you, Mr. Ebert. Thank you for everything you wrote about this incident. Your original comment was fine and appropriate. People who mix "partying" and motor vehicles needed that rhetorical slap in the face.

Drunk or not, he was speeding (like nearly 100 mph over the speed limit) when he lost control of the vehicle. Having had friends and family members killed and injured by drunk and/or reckless drivers, I'm not terribly sympathetic. He did something stupid and dangerous that cost him his life and the life of his passenger.

Harvey has a point, that when something like this happens, it can open the lines of communication about such a topic. However, in doing so, you have to be aware that it will certainly cause more pain to their loved ones. Mr. Ebert made a choice, and it was to put the cause ahead of the family's personal tragedy - which he has every right to, but that does not mean it wasn't hurtful. If anyone wants to draw attention to the subject after a tragic loss, it probably should have been left to his friends or family to do so, certainly not a stranger.

They have not even announced if he was drunk or not!!! What the hell is the matter with you people?? I live in West Chester... I have met Ryan many times... He was a very kind soul and the fact that you people are trashing him without knowing the facts makes me sick!!! He was someones son, brother, nephew, friend,etc... Have alittle respect! LET GO OF YOUR INTERNET BALLS AND MOVE ON!!! Put yourself in his familys place... If you just lost someone close to you how would you feel after reading some of these comments... Grow up and let people grieve! I hope you all burn in hell...

drinking and driving is wrong that is obvious. The real issue is two people lost their lives due to a mistake and unfortunately they are being drug through the mud as a result. These two individuals had families who deserve respect, not people smoking them because of how or why they died. For gods sake, have people not made errors in judgement? It sickens me that people keep calling the passenger his "drinking pal" no how about his friend or another human life- he has a name. The pain and agongy that these two mens family, friends and fans are feeeling is horrific. Ebert was a TRUE JACKASS for making that comment. He could have shared his views by saying it was a terrible shame to amazing people died and reminds us all why drinking and driving shouldn't occur. Remember these two individuals died young and will be missed terribly by their family and friends. I hope that people pray for them as they should and not spend their time saying- Well see thats whay happens. If we all paid for our mistakes with death, we would be exstint. RIP to both of you and may you be graced by god and remembered by your loved ones. I pray for the living now that feel immense pain in their heart.

Well first off I dont care who you are but Ryan has a family out there that is morning the loss of their son people could atleast respect his family and give them time it just happend yesterday in no way should people be bashing anyone this is a time for their families to morn not for people to be bad mouthing their son let this family atleast have some peace! It is to bad that people jump to conclusions before the truth comes out. It might have been a night of bad decision making but the only people that have to deal with this is the friends and family of both men, both familes have to live with this the rest of their lives. So take a break haters and let these familes lay their sons to rest. You are only hurting them more by the harsh words you have said so think about it this way what if that was your brother, your son, or even your best friend you would be just as furious as Bam and just as hurt so, ultimately how would you feel if you were in their families shoes? Stupid decsion or not let Ryan and his friend be laid to rest and at least give their families that! He was a best friend, a son, a comedian, a man that made countless people laugh! My heart goes out to everyone in both familes! No matter what people lost someone they loved and no one would be talking negatively if it happend to someone they knew. So to the familes I say I am deeply sorry for your loss my heart goes out to you and you are in my prayers keep your heads held high and think about the best memories and dont listen to the bull **** that people say because they dont know what it feels like so stay strong! (the nerve that some people have makes me sick think if it was your family then make a comment about it! pretty sure you would not say those things if it was part of your family!)

The death of Ryan Dunn is very sad yes, and Elbert does have a point about Drinking and Driving too. But he did make a mistake on only blasting Ryan Dunn, especially after his death. The problem with most of Hollywood nowadays is that they have no consideration for anyone, absolutely none. Elbert especially since he blasted Ryan Dunn right after his death. Yes it was wrong to Drink and Drive and consequences were paid with human lives. But another thing that should be taken under consideration is Elbert's absolute arrogance in this situation.

for all you that put the blame on the drunk driver ,maybe 3/4 of you should look in the mirror and you might just see your self in the reflection, you all know at one time or another you have gotten behind the wheel with a few, drinks under your belts but just never got caught or had a bad situation come of it ,but when something like this happens you all cant wait to point the finger, you all need to back off and give the family and friends time to grieve ,they dont need to here the bull-s from all of you ,, miss you Ryan...
