Roger Ebert BLASTS Ryan Dunn for Drunk Driving

6/20/2011 11:43 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Ryan Dunn hasn't even been dead for a day yet -- and film critic Roger Ebert is already ripping the late "Jackass" star for boozing before getting behind the wheel  ... tweeting, "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive."

Ryan Dunn Drunk
TMZ broke the story ... Dunn's drinking buddy claims Ryan had at least 3 beers and 3 shots before hitting the road in his Porsche.

Obviously, Ebert has a point -- but we gotta ask ...

If he had been alone in the car, then this would be too soon. Instead, he had a passenger and was out drinking with friends before the crash. You don't have to be legally drunk to have alcohol affect your ability to drive. Even a single drink has been shown to decrease your reaction time. It's sad that he took someone out with him when he made the very jackass-ish decision to drink and then drive.

Ebert's right. Enabler's let enabler's drink and drive. True friendship is a beautiful caring thing.Where people look out for what's best for one another.

Someone just lost their son...it hasn't been said whether or not alcohol was a factor...too soon? yeah your kinda jumping the gun there...wouldn't you feel like a jacka** if he wasn't drunk? This is sad anyway you look at it...a little respect people.

Too soon? Absolutely not!! Its too late! If in fact he was drunk at the time of the accident, he should burn in hell. He took an innocent life and destroyed a nice car and public property. Hope he had good insurance, because his family is gonna get sued big by the other persons family. We all know that drinking and driving is bad, yet people continue to do it. Maybe we need to bring back prohibition in the US to keep idiots from hurting themselves and others.

Brad Brad

Wow..At least have some f***en respect. The man just passed for gods sake!

Curious Curious

Is Ebert ripping Ryan or is he ripping the folks that let Ryan drive after drinking? Seems to me he's ripping the friends of the Jackass star for letting him drive after drinking. Open to interpretation?

That may be the case, But come on the poor guy has not even been dead a day, and the fact that we don't even know his blood level yet, what a ass have a heart

He is right!! And it's not too soon....more people need to hear this before they end up dead or killing an innocent person!!!! There is no excuse, ever for this!!!!!

Mr. DickTurpin Mr. DickTurpin

Ebert is being his usually witty self - his comment makes him sound like a jackass - that's the point - it's an homage to Ryan Dunn. Get it?

It's too soon. You don't talk bad about people who have passed away. Especially within the same day! It's just an ******* thing to do. Yeah, he had been drinking. I have been around it my whole life and it has literally destroyed my family. But if the person who was suppose to be my ride had been drinking (no matter how much) I would use common sense and not get in the car with him. Sure, the passenger was innocent, but he should have thought about it. Duuuuuuuh. It's not rocket science. It was an accident.

Nice ragging on Roger Ebert, as though he were attacking an unfortunate person who had just died of some horrible illness. No. Ryan Dunn was driving 130 mph. He had over 30 previous convictions for reckless driving and traffic violations. Whether he was drinking or not, he was going 130 mph with a passenger in the car! He had previous DUIs, and it is not a stretch to assume that he was drunk when this happened. Sorry, but he murdered somebody. Ebert is right on.

This is a very sad and tragic accident and my prayers and condolences go out to the families, friends and love ones of Dunn and Bam.
With all due respect, however, I hope and pray that a valuable lesson will emerge from this horrific and senseless event – Don’t Drink and Drive – plain and simple!
It’s sad that no one at the bar had the courage or common sense to say, “Mr. Dunn, I am going to call you a cab.” Better yet, "Mr. Dunn I am going to call you a limousine, because I like your talent and I want to see you again in “Jackass 3.” Perhaps his celebrity status also contributed to his death. I am sure that the bar profited from Dunn’s celebrity status.

Roger hit the nail on the head. I hate drunk drivers. One almost killed my son-in-law. Today two more sons are dead. What a waste.

so what if he was drunk how many ppl a day drive drunk and have killed other innocent ppl while doing that mind u that the ppl that were with him were probly drunk too (this could of been alot worse). people make mistakes we're only human. i'm sure any body that has comment on this isnt perfect. so instead of disrepecting the dead and poking at what he did wrong how bout we say a pray (or whatever u do) and keep the ppl that dunn has left behind in our hearts and hope that they can get through this. if u've ever lost anyone that is close to you i'm sure you wanted random people talking **** about the one u lost. so stop bashing dunn for drunk driving, and as far as this roger dude goes he's just a typical old ******* that doesnt know how to keep his mouth shut (bam dont listen to the BS its not worth it)

Even if he was drunk, Ebert has no right to be an *******. The man died in a vicious accident, for Christ's sake. His friend decided to get into the car knowing Ryan was probably drunk. It doesn't make it any better but the other guy should have thought ahead as to what could happen. How do you think all of Ryan's close friends and family feel? They're devastated. Stop being such jerks. If it was your friend or family member, you'd be acting the same ******* way. Ebert needs to be just a tad more sensitive. Just saying.

atleast i do & i hope atleast some people agree with me on this. im still devastated about his death , atleast the jackass crew live their lives doing something they love !

All the apologists are breathing valuable air. One less drunk with too much money, too little common sense, and no respect for his own life. Good riddance.

Wow, I bet if it were one of your best friends all of you douches would be singing a different tune. No one forced the passenger into the car, it was a mistake...sure, but is it the place of a bunch of gossiping dumbasses to judge, I think that is someone elses job. So have some respect, Ryan Dunn had a lot more class than any of you, and he was on Jackass, so what does that say? Think about it.

Ordinarily, I'd say it's too soon but the fact is we are the lucky ones that he didn't kill not only himself and a "friend" but someone any one of us could have known. It's unconscienable how these people think their entitled to endanger other for their good time. "Poor guy"??? someone said. I think not. He was irresponsible in an unforgivable way and his friends and colleagues all knew it, predicting this would be his end as he'd done it time and time again evidently to their knowledge and wanna cry blues NOW??? I say, you knew, you didn't blast him for it as a friend and then you whine about someone calling you on it, so not EAT IT. Hope the funeral is the thoughtful teacher all of you needed. Sorry it turned out for you like that but you saw it coming and didn't even have the humility to say, I'm sorry he never listened and it's painful this was his end as a friend. I have a very miniscule amount of sympathy for them. They represent the "Jackass" brand for an excellent reason.

Too bad it was Ryan Dunn instead of the drunken toilet mouth racist Mel Gibson or Lindsey "I was only drinking tea" Lohan.
