Tobey Maguire Poker Scandal -- Check. Mate

6/22/2011 4:05 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Tobey Maguire once received a $69,200 check from convicted hedge fund manager Brad Ruderman -- after Maguire allegedly STOMPED the guy during an illegal high stakes poker game back in 2007.

Maguire is only one of several high-profile people named in legal docs as a player in the poker games -- along with "Girls Gone Wild" kingpin Joe Francis and Paris Hilton sex tape partner Rick Salomon.

According to the docs, obtained by TMZ, the games took place at fancy establishments and all over town  ... including the famous Viper Room on the Sunset Strip.

One game allegedly went down in the club back in 2005 ... AFTER former club owner Johnny Depp sold his shares of the place.

As far as I know, playing poker for money is NOT illegal, unless there is a "house" taking a cut.

I wonder if he paid taxes on the money that he won?

The IRS and the State of California will be all over Maguire's bank records...

Re-read the article, m0r0n.
Sometimes it is better to keep your silence and have people think you the fool rather than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

so ridiculous that this kind of thing is illegal. It's none of anyone's bizness. Like smoking a little pot or hiring some booty. People who are into less government should be all about supporting getting rid of these antiquated b.s. laws.

This is ridiculous, these games went on years ago. They got screwed by the ponzy scheme, so they're going after people the guy played poker with? These people loaned money to family, now they too are getting sued by the guy trying to recoup lost money. I hope they don't get away with this, I would understand if these celebrities knew about the scheme but jeez!

THIS has nothing to do with poker. I read a longer article and its about getting back some of the 'ponzi scheme' money : )

You should also look at most of these gamblers, most of them have had some kind of substance abuse problems that are playing, not most of the one's named, but the whole backside of player's have just cross addicted themselves into gambling. This may seem vague, but as more people are named, you'll just count the drug & alcohol problems plus rehabs. Gambling is not a "harmless" game, even at higher stakes, people lose homes plus criminal behavior. This story has legs, run with it.
