Peter Falk Dies

6/24/2011 10:35 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Peter Falk -- star of the TV show "Columbo" -- died last night ... TMZ has learned.

Peter Falk Dead
Falk -- who suffered from Alzheimer's disease -- was 83.

A rep for the family tells TMZ, "Peter Falk, 83-year-old Academy Award nominee and star of television series, 'Columbo', died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in the evening of June 23, 2011."

The rep continued, "Peter Falk is survived by his wife, Shera, of 34 years and two daughters from a previous marriage."

In addition to "Columbo," Falk starred in "Princess Bride," "Brigadoon" and "The Great Race."

Peter's wife, Shera and daughter Catherine were locked in a legal battle in 2009 over the creation of a conservatorship for Peter and who would control it.  In the end, the judge appointed Shera conservator.

UPDATE: John Finnegan -- Falk's "Columbo" co-star -- tells TMZ, he fell literally FELL DOWN when heard the news ... “I have known Peter for over 60 years ...  He was like a brother for me, he kept the food on the table.  He was the best, great!"

You always knew up front who the killer was on Columbo. It was fun to watch how he figured it out. As Max on The Great Race, he was the greatest sidekick ever. He wasnt in the theatrical Brigadoon, just a tv movie. Alzheimer's robbed the world o*****reat actor.

Some of his best stuff isn't even being mentioned here -- His work with Eileen Brennan in "The Cheap Detective" and "Murder by Death" was genius. In each case, he was part of an amazing ensemble cast, but my god, were he and Brennan hilarious together. You can't get "The Brinks Job" on DVD, but I own it on VHS precisely because it's a great heist movie. And don't forget him as one of the cabbies in "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World"... He was, hands down, awesome as Columbo. But he did so much other great stuff ("Princess Bride"!), that it would be a shame to see his legacy get reduced to just one thing.

Apparently Alzheimer's put the light out some time ago, so I agree it may be for the best that he's finally gone, but there truly will never be another like him. Godspeed, and thank you, Mr. Falk.

Columbo was GREAT, when solving crimes took brain power not a Google search.

Just one more thing... rest well.
