Hurls Homophobic Slur

At Fan

7/5/2011 4:10 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

WWE bad guy CM Punk was caught on camera screaming "You homo!" at a fan during a verbal altercation in Australia today ... this as the WWE has said repeatedly they are trying to curb homophobic slurs.

The wrestling organization works directly with GLAAD and even produced a series of anti-bullying commercials following incidents involving announcer Michael Cole and wrestler John Cena.

Calls to GLAAD were not returned.

UPDATE: A rep for the WWE tells TMZ, "WWE does not condone this type of language or bias and we reinforce that with our talent who are independent contractors."

UPDATE 2: CM apologized via Twitter, saying, "...I'm embarrassed. I own up to being a total douche in this situation and I offer a sincere apology to anybody I hurt with careless words."

I love how everyone blathers on and on about how FAKE wrestling is, until the moment something they deem offensive is said or done, suddenly their granny panties are all in a twist. What happened to it being fake? If a character on a TV show like Law & Order called another character a "homo", do the viewers get their undies in a knot over it? No. Because they realize it is fake. Get it? Fake! So why should professional wrestling, of all things, be held to a different standard??? People are pathetic.

I would like to first mention that I support homosexuality and equal rights, and although I am not gay, many of my closest friends are and would rarely be offended by an innocent slip of the tongue triggered by years of using bad language as a child without knowing the proper meaning. Everyone is guilty of this, and as a result it is not offensive or taboo. At the beginning of a Louie C.K. Stand up he points out in a very relative way that people have a habit of using such slurs in different ways and not purposefully using them as a sexual slur. It is used in the same context as "Wuss" or "lame". As rightly pointed out CM Punk is a great supporter of equal rights and homosexuality, and when watching the clip again, while also keeping mind that this is an ON SCREEN CHARACTER, please take the language into the same context as Louie C.K. did in his stand up, stop taking life so seriously and looking for a reason to be offended, and laugh, because his quick wit is actually quite funny. RELAX!
