Amy's Dad:

'Goodnight My Angel

... Sleep Tight'

7/26/2011 7:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Amy Winehouse's father gave a touching speech at her funeral moments ago ... telling stories from her childhood ... playing music ... and telling his daughter to "sleep tight."

The 45-minute ceremony was led by a Rabbi and included prayers in English and Hebrew.

During Mitch Winehouse's eulogy, he said, "Goodnight my angel ... Sleep tight. Mommy and Daddy love you ever so much."

The ceremony ended with a rendition of the Carole King song, "So Far Away" ... while Mitch encouraged mourners to sing along.

Her father should have done something to prevent this. He knew exactly what was going on. The only thing he ever did was support her boob job.

For Amy's parents a hymn by Cleland B. McAfee
"There is a place of quiet rest
Near to the heart of God.
A place where sin cannot molest,
Near to the heart of God."
I hope the words can bring them some comfort that Amy went to sleep and did not awake but did not suffer.

Russell Brand said it best in his passage to Amy: "When you love someone who suffers from the disease of addiction you await the phone call. There will be a phone call. The sincere hope is that the call will be from the addict themselves, telling you they’ve had enough, that they’re ready to stop, ready to try something new. Of course though, you fear the other call, the sad nocturnal chime from a friend or relative telling you it’s too late, she’s gone.

Frustratingly it’s not a call you can ever make it must be received. It is impossible to intervene."

As a mother of a beautiful 24 year old daughter who suffers from addiction, I know these sentiments only too well. I, too, wait for "that" phone call. I've gone the distance with trying to offer help - unless the person with the addiction is ready, all you can do is stand by, love them and wait.

My heart goes out to Amy Winehouse, her parents, family and friends. RIP Amy.

@SusanCoyote, That's right blame the dad, I'm sure Amy had nothing to do with it, SHE WAS 27 years old...When does the addict take on responsibility?

You can't save your child at 27 years o****e from self-destruction by drugs and alcohol. Oh you fantasy world people who think you can. Shame on you.

Right on Fred Farkel, a parent cannot follow their adult children around for the rest of their lives...She was by the way very close to her parents and she still couldn't stop herself..Face it some people just like getting wasted.

It seems like she had decent, supportive parents. Too bad she failed them.

@sad-sad why blame TMZ for this? They didn't put the needles in her arm or the coke in her nose. They didn't put the liquor bottle in her hand and forced her to drink...

They reported on what was there. Would you blame ABC, CBS or NBC if they did the same thing?
