Ryan O'Neal

8/4/2011 3:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Hours after one son was arrested for drug possession on Tuesday, his other son got into a gnarly head-on car accident -- and now, Hollywood legend Ryan O'Neal tells TMZ, his family is "falling apart."

The first son, 26-year-old Redmond O'Neal -- who has a long history with drugs -- pled "not guilty" to  heroin possession and unlawful possession of a firearm this morning ... but Ryan tells us, the kid "has a real problem."

Ryan hasn't seen his other son -- 46-year-old Griffin O'Neal -- in years ... but thankfully, he heard through the grapevine ... Griffin wasn't seriously injured in Tuesday's head-on collision.

All in all, Ryan's still optimistic despite the familial setbacks -- insisting, "We'll come back."

Very warm hugs from me to Tatum O'Neal. Something else I've learned about God that's very true. He sees us all equally. We're all equal in God's eyes. Thus, his opinion of us matters the most.

Griffin O'Neal still needs love and affection from his father Ryan. Yes, again, Griffin was responsible for his own actions this time. No, Ryan wasn't to blame for this, not this time. Yes, I still don't believe having constant pity parties for people is the way to break through people's self-destruction and will never believe that. However, I think deep down Griffin's still doing self-destructive things because he just wants some love and hugs from Ryan. Ryan I'm not going to have a pity party for you either. Uh-uh. No, you're still responsible for your own actions, too. You need to love and hug your son, Griffin, though, Ryan. Please do that for him. I think he'd still accept it, now. Farrah would really want that, too. It's true, that she really, really would and I honestly don't think it would kill you, Ryan. Griffin's a person, and counts, too. If you don't love, and hug him, he'll never truly find peace. Neither will you Ryan, or the rest of your family. Love and affection is important, too, in life. To ALL of us. We all need it. That's God's truth, too.

The best movie you were ever in was Love Story!! Why would a parent send their children walking down a lonely road because they became infatuated with one woman? If it was love all the children would have been a part of the life you and Farrah had!!! Tatum was a child. Now that she is is an adult you expect forgiveness and understanding? We all have issues to deal with. Children resond to love and understanding from the adult factor in a family! We may not always do the right thing, but you have to be willing to give. I am 58, and I will always be the child to my parents. Parent's don't have the luxury to be self indulged, weather your rich or poor. Ryan you are a person of the past! Stay ther and be happy with it. You and Farrah did not age well, but Tatum did, she is a very pretty woman and you should be PROUD!
