's new movie about a pizza delivery boy who's abducted, outfitted with a bomb, and forced to rob a bank ... is PISSING OFF friends of a man who was killed under VERY similar circumstances ... TMZ has learned.

The movie -- "30 Minutes or Less" -- is being promoted as a comedy flick. But back in 2003, nobody was laughing when 46-year-old pizza man Brian Wells DIED when a bomb strapped around his neck exploded after he tried to rob a bank.

0805_brian_wells_sub_2
Wells insisted he was abducted during a pizza delivery in Pennsylvania -- claiming the bombmaker locked an explosive device around his neck and ordered him to rob a bank.

Cops placed Wells in handcuffs ... but backed away from the guy when they realized the bomb was REAL. The bomb exploded while news cameras rolled ... and Wells was killed instantly.

Years later, federal prosecutors alleged Brian concocted the plan with several other people. One of the plotters insisted Brian was under the impression an actual bomb would NOT be used.

TMZ spoke with one of Brian's closest friends who tells us he's outraged that Hollywood would mock Wells' death ... calling the movie "trash."

The friend tells us, "It's stupid the movie is even coming out ... producers can go jump in a lake for all I care!"

He adds, "Doesn't Brian have a right to die? They're blowing something up that should never have even happened in the first place and now they wanna make a joke out of it ... it's really tragic."

A rep for Columbia Pictures tells TMZ, "Neither the filmmakers nor the stars of '30 Minutes or Less' were aware of this crime prior to their involvement in the film."

The rep adds, "The writers were vaguely familiar with what had occurred and wrote an original screenplay that does not mirror the real-life tragedy. "

Wasn't their intention, but the movie is too similar to what happened to that guy. Bad coincidence.

OK, I'll say it...A 43 year-old pizza delivery guy? Really not that big a loss in the grand scheme.

@ superman, who cares if they heard about it or not. They still have no lawsuit. All movies are based on something that most likely happened to someone somewhere. Does not mean they can sue. You can even write books about people and they cannot sue you. Its called unauthorized. You are like the many idiots in this country who thinks you can sue for anything. FYI he was involved in that and everyone knows it. Do you think that one person who conspired with him pulled that off alone. Get real.

First preview I saw automatically the Brian Wells story jumped into my head , it has just about everything the Brian Wells story has and it's just not funny, in bad taste all around and I can bet this movie is gonna bomb (no pun intended).
If Brian Wells didn't die in such a manner the movie might actually have been a hit but people don't like to be reminded of horrible deaths and especially Brian Wells death. I hope the studio has to eat the cost of this movie and maybe a lesson be taught -"Don't mess with People's emotions over such a horrible tragedy as a real person was killed and the Family deals with the death of a loved one over & over" When is Hollywood gonna get creative and make some real movies , Maybe the Studio needs some better writers and hire some people who have a better direction into today's world of comedy where you don't need to apply a Real tragedy to get laughs as it's disgusting and wrong.

You guys realize crime shows have done this plot over 10 times since this case happened. And the media reported on it for years after as evidence surfaced and its been featured on many shows for ways of death. So if you think anyone gives a damn your wrong. And lawsuit? LMAO nope

"The writers were vaguely familiar with what had occurred ---" and searched the internet for the real tragedy then wrote the screenplay.

*****, let's quit making movies altogether then. Everything is bound to offend someone, somewhere at some time. Sheesh. The guy was apparently in on the bomb/robbery, not the Hollywood's fault this douche blew himself up.

When is hollywood going to stop making movies written by high school kids, remakes and old cartoons. Yeah someone heard about this and the disclaimer at the end will say not based of any real people bla bla. It doesn't even look funny.

Not surprised here. Movie producers are running out of movie ideas so they take things that really happened and try to make money off of it by making it into a movie. United States sucks.

I just Wiki'd this story. Apparently they're gonna be in jail for a while.
I wonder if they don't care they're in jail right now because it was worth Brian Wells having his head blown off. I'll bet they'll still smile on the inside when they visualize his head exploding.
