's new movie about a pizza delivery boy who's abducted, outfitted with a bomb, and forced to rob a bank ... is PISSING OFF friends of a man who was killed under VERY similar circumstances ... TMZ has learned.

The movie -- "30 Minutes or Less" -- is being promoted as a comedy flick. But back in 2003, nobody was laughing when 46-year-old pizza man Brian Wells DIED when a bomb strapped around his neck exploded after he tried to rob a bank.

0805_brian_wells_sub_2
Wells insisted he was abducted during a pizza delivery in Pennsylvania -- claiming the bombmaker locked an explosive device around his neck and ordered him to rob a bank.

Cops placed Wells in handcuffs ... but backed away from the guy when they realized the bomb was REAL. The bomb exploded while news cameras rolled ... and Wells was killed instantly.

Years later, federal prosecutors alleged Brian concocted the plan with several other people. One of the plotters insisted Brian was under the impression an actual bomb would NOT be used.

TMZ spoke with one of Brian's closest friends who tells us he's outraged that Hollywood would mock Wells' death ... calling the movie "trash."

The friend tells us, "It's stupid the movie is even coming out ... producers can go jump in a lake for all I care!"

He adds, "Doesn't Brian have a right to die? They're blowing something up that should never have even happened in the first place and now they wanna make a joke out of it ... it's really tragic."

A rep for Columbia Pictures tells TMZ, "Neither the filmmakers nor the stars of '30 Minutes or Less' were aware of this crime prior to their involvement in the film."

The rep adds, "The writers were vaguely familiar with what had occurred and wrote an original screenplay that does not mirror the real-life tragedy. "

I seen the movie a week ago by going to the local release party of it. Before the movie I first thought about the same incident that happened prior and thought the movie was going to be based off of that. But really the only singularities is that the bomb is strapped to a pizza guy and he needs to get money. After that the similarities stop.

I said the family was going to be outraged, the first time I saw the trailer for this movie. There's no was in heck that its an original script. Not to mention there was a similiar scenario on the spike tv show a 1000 ways to die. I want to say that one happend in 2008?
I live in Mpls. Minnesota, home to the 35W bridge collapse, which happened 4 years ago Aug. 1st. I've commented to my family, how sorry I feel for those who were involved & how there is a bridge collapse scene in the upcoming Final Destination 5 movie.
I understand they want to make money, but whats next a comedy movie about September 11th? When & where do you draw the line?

if the producers really were not aware of this crime then their research team sucks. Regardless, I think the movie is a stupid idea.

This movie is no differant when writers take real life stories and there it is on Life time Tv, I;m from Erie pa the town where this happend and Brian Wells was in on the robbing of the bank. His partners had other plans and things went very wrong for Wells and hr died. My bet it comes down to money and and fsmily feels left out of the money tree of this story. But think the more the family bitches about this movie the press it's going to get.

I can't wait to see this movie. But when the producers claim to have never heard about the real case, they are either lying or live in a cave....

People in this nation are so stupid, The guy died.Anyone could have said he was in the scheme and people would believe them. He isnt here to Explain himself or say what really happened. Its not like he confessed that he was in the plan of the bank being robbed.

for all of you on the side of the family and that think brian wells was innocent. His family even thought that he was a willing participant in the initial plan but thought the bomb was going to be a fake. he got duped, but he was all for robbing the bank. They gave him a loaded shotgun before he went into the bank. Who gives a hostage a loaded shotgun? The answer is no one. He was in on it and the movie is not about his life. it is supposed to be a comedy. People need to relax.

Let's be serious here. For all the people who are saying that this movie was not based off the incident, get a clue. Someone said if they were shot by a gun and someone made a movie where someone was shot with a gun it would be the same thing as this. OH THE STUPIDITY. How do people like this exist in society without walking into traffic? Anyway..

The original incident involved a Pizza delivery man who had a bomb strapped to him and was forced (the convicted masterminds of this claimed he was involved to get a deal) to rob a bank under the threat that the bomb would be detonated. How Columbia Pictures can just LIE about this is beyond me. They didn't have a better answer?

9 to 5 American

I am from Erie PA where the Pizza bomber all happen. If you have now followed the case like many of us in the Erie area did you would not understand all the twist and turns this case took. I don’t think this movie will do any justice to what all happened. Another thing is who the hell would play Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong? She is one scary, nutcase lady.

This just happened in Sydney, Australia last week, to a 18 year old girl, for ten hours she thought she had a bomb strapped to her neck. . It is very stupid subject of movie to make. The bomb in Sydney was fake.

Coming soon from Columbia Pictures: "Death or Detention" about 2 misfit teens who through a series of wacky misadventures find themselves at school and armed to the teeth! When they open fire who knows what will happen??? Doesn't have anything to do with columbine though. The producers were vaguely familiar with the story but the actors never heard of it.
