"To Catch A Predator"

Judge Dismisses Sex Case

Says Dateline Entrapped Sailor

8/16/2011 5:16 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A sailor caught in the web of Dateline's "To Catch a Predator" was just acquitted of all charges, after the judge ruled NBC engaged in entrapment.

Joseph Roisman was prosecuted for lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor, after allegedly arranging a meeting with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl.

Judge Arthur Wick in Sonoma County, California, threw the case out after the prosecution presented its case, ruling prosecutors failed to prove Roisman had an intent to have sex with the decoy.

Roisman's lawyer, L. Stephen Turer, lashed out at the tactics of the people responsible for "To Catch a Predator," saying "They took everything away from this kid just to make a TV show."

Turer added, "This case is the poster child for the abuse in this program."

There were 29 arrests as a result of the Dateline sting.  28 of the defendants pled guilty without going to trial.  This is the only case of the 29 that went to trial, and Dateline's tactics were squarely repudiated.

NBC could not be reached for comment.

Well, it certainly makes one wonder about the judge and his own inklings. After all, they've arrested rabbis, doctors, teachers and so forth in these stings.

NBC engaged in entrapment? Did the police put NBC up to the so-called entrapment? Entrapment by the police is a defense not by a private party unless that party was acting as an agent of the police. I think NBC has a good argument that they were only interested in putting on a show.

Good for the Judge. And to those who love pointing the finger at this misguided fool, many of your grandparents would have been sex offenders today according to today's laws. Remember that.

now what

I think everyone on this site taking the side of these PREDATORS should be investigated by the feds. I'm not even mad at his attorney cause a defense attorney is supposed to get his client off. However the judge should have his computer checked cause sounds like he might be a PREDATOR too.

Was the sitting judge formerly a Catholic priest by chance?
Would explain a lot. That law office will get a bunch more business now from the pedophilic community. :)

Clearly this judge didn't do the fair amount of research into the show. They didn't "take anything away" from a kid. They use decoys that are over the age of 18 to catch these predators. And it's better to use people to bait these sickos than to allow them to abuse a real child. Shame on this judge.

It's people like you commenters calling for this man's head that makes me disgusted to be American. It's people like who responsible for the Spanish Inquisition, the SAlem Witch Trials, and all of the 1960...s bullsh*t paranoia that fed dozens of Twilight Zone episodes, like the Monsters are Due on Maple Street and others. Shame on you to jump to conclusions. Your kids aren't so great. Keep that in mind. the world is NOT out to get them.

I'm not justifying molesters or Child preditors, but usually the majority have been victims of abuse themselves & sadly act out their experiance with children. As to how stop them before they commit a crime is almost impossible. The best defence starts in the home with the Parents! They need to take responsibility for their children by teaching them what to do if confronted by a preditor & too, get busy with their children by seeing what they are up to on the computer. By using adults (police or NBC) to pretend to be kids is, well, entrapment anyway you look at it. You can't put a person behind bar's for 'Thinking' about doing something. Remember too all you self-righteous finger pointers...3 fingers are pointing back at you. Usually those who are Finger Pointers & who cause trouble for others like Chris usually have something to hide! That's why their Pointing their fingers, to take the attention away from themselves.

This judge represents a problem with our entire legal system. Just think about the millions of real 13 year old girls on the internet right now, trying to coax older guys into having free and consentual sex with them. If Chris Hansen wasn't there to with these girls, how many others would actually complete those immoral acts?

My guess is that many of those perps didn't even know they were s***bag, lowlife, perveted pedophiles before one of Hansen's jailbaiters presented them with the indecent proposal. It is my belief that our society is infested with people guilty of such thought crimes, and we need more people like Hansen to draw them out.

It also seems we need to rewrite some of our laws regarding entrapment. The economy may be hurting, but I'm convinced that if we build bigger prisons and fix a few laws, our country will be much better for it.
