Amy Winehouse's Family:

Singer Was NOT On Drugs

When She Died

8/23/2011 7:29 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Amy Winehouse
's family claims toxicology tests prove Amy was not on any sort of illegal drugs at the time of her death ... but she had been drinking.

According to the family, officials have not determined if the booze played a role in the singer's death.

The family did not mention if  prescription drugs were detected in the toxicology report.

The statement comes as a shock to just about everyone on the planet ... since Amy struggled with a MAJOR substance abuse problem for years.

TMZ spoke with a rep from Scotland Yard ... who told us the law enforcement agency has not yet received a copy of the toxicology results from the coroner.

Winehouse died in her London apartment on July 23.

7:43 AM: A rep for the family released a statement saying, "Toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy's system at the time of her death."

The statement continues, "Results indicate that alcohol was present but it cannot be determined as yet if it played a role in her death."

"The family would like to thank the police and coroner for their continuing thorough investigations and for keeping them informed throughout the process.  They await the outcome of the inquest in October."

Regardless, her whole life was sad. I lost someone close recently that died in a similar fashion. It doesn't matter how, although, sometimes people need to know for closure. The family, that is. It is actually none of our business. I know this is TMZ - but she was talented and had a disease. It is simply sad.

No illegal drugs ... ok, how about legal or prescription? That wasn't addressed in the statement. Elvis didn't die from ingesting illegal drugs either .. just saying.

No "illegal" drugs. Say she was on oxy, its illegal. If she has a prescription, then it is legal. Throwing the word "illegal" out there is trying to make it sound like she was not on any prescriptions

I love how on this matters, she could be almost 20 hours a day and 6 days a week under the influence of drugs or alcohol, without proper sleep or a good meal (she was very VERY skinny, and not exercise skinny). But at the last hour they send the press release stating that she didn't died of drug overdose, because THAT DAY she wasn't drugged... It's like saying, pardon me, you are not dying because of the car hitting you yesterday, you're dying of internal bleeding because your stomach ripped yesterday. But THIS DAY you weren't hit by a car... Accept the obvious fact, she was a user, the drugs undermined her health, the drugs contributed greatly on her death. It could be a lot more credible if the released something like: "Heart attack caused by extended periods of drug abuse".

I absolutely LOVE this woman's voice and have all of her music, but let's face it, she was a s*** bucket and it probably will never come out that the booze and LEGAL overdose of drugs caused her demise. What a waste of life's space!!!!

If it wasn't illegal drugs, it was probably the mix of alcohol and painkillers. Everyone has a vice. RIP

Elvis didn't have any illegal drugs in his toxicology screen either; they were all PRESCRIBED by Dr. Nick.

just because there were no "illegal" drugs doesn't mean there weren't "any" drugs found in her system. I'm a long time "legal" oxycontin taker and their statement doesn't mean ****e.

Oh please, legal or illegal, she has a long history of drug abuse. Next thing the family is going to say is she died of "natural" causes.

do they not realize that alcohol is a drug too. it may be legal to buy but it is a drug. some people need to get a grip on what is and what isn't drugs. it doesnt matter if it is legal to have them or not.
