Rep. Gabrielle Giffords

AZ GOP Auctions Gun Like

The One Used to Shoot Her

9/3/2011 6:05 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

So far ... this wins craziest story of the weekend ....The Republican Party in Pima County, AZ is raffling off a gun almost identical to the one used to shoot the Congresswoman in that very same county ... Gabrielle Giffords.

The online newsletter (see below) went out last Friday and features on page 3 a chance to win "a Glock 23 .40 handgun for just 10 bucks." But hang on -- if your name is drawn, you don't just win the gun ... you get "three 12-round magazines, adjustable grips, and a case."

A Glock 19 handgun was allegedly used by Jared Loughner in an attack on January 8, 2011 that injured 13 (including Rep. Giffords) and killed six.

Michael McNulty, Giffords' campaign manager, told the Arizona Republic he was "struggling for the words to describe my reaction" to the raffle.

The interim chairman of the Pima County GOP told the paper he was surprised at the reaction, saying Rep. Giffords owned a Glock herself and was an outspoken supporter of the Second Amendment. He explained, "That Glock is no more responsible for those deaths and the congresswoman's injuries than a Number 2 pencil is responsible for cheating on a test."

Translation -- guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Real translation -- This guy doesn't have a clue.

Interim Chairman Mike Shaw told the Arizona Daily Star that the raffle went so well ... they sold a deer rifle too. U-S-A!!!

Did you guys ever see the episode of "30 Days" where they sent a woman who lives in the city, extremely fearful of guns, and against them--out to the country to live with extremely pro gun folks?

Both sides are equally justified in their stance. Of course people who live in places where gun crime happens every day are going to vilify guns, it's the tool of choice for criminals and murderers. Of course people who live in places where gun crime almost never happens are going to defend guns, it's the tool of choice for hunters and sportsman. In two different environments, the same tool serves two different purposes.

I'm a proud Republican, but the dummy who thought up this stupid lottery is an idiot.Lunacy abounds in both political parties.

Arizona should be it's own country! Arizona makes the state of Mississippi look progressive.

Outrageous TMZ... Im a responsible gun owner and Republican. That you'd even make such allegations in this post that we're all a bunch of gun toting maniacs that want to murder folks makes me scratch my head. I'm so glad I left LA and moved towards San Diego. Normal people, the military... You should be ashamed of yourselves. Im pretty much done reading this site.

Evil Jon: 14 minutes ago TeamNadya, usually raffled guns go through a gun dealer. So if you are the lucky winner, you go to the gun shop and do the appropriate paperwork/background checks. Then pick up your new gun. From your post it seems like your actually hoping someone will do something stupid with the gun. ???
First, thanks for explaining how the gun raffle thing works, but I am still not impress. Guns are so easy to get now days, if not off the street then especially by "People" with clean records buying it legally and selling them on the streets or it possibly ending up in the wrong hands somehow. Everytime I pick up a paper or read the news, It's about senseless gun crimes leaving many dead (often innocent school students/teacher) or haven't you heard about Columbine? I wonder how that person "People" end up with a gun in the first place? People just don't keep their guns in their home for protection anymore, Evil Jon. They're taking them on the street and this is the ending results--->

Guns end up in the wrong "People" hands

A man suspected of shooting a teenager who hit him with a snowball was arrested Saturday and charged with murder.

Police found Jose Mendez, 24, in an empty apartment, they were alerted by someone who noticed Mendez and flagged down a police car.

The victim, Teven Rutledge, was mortally wounded on his 15th birthday last Sunday and died the next day.

The teenager and some friends were throwing snowballs when one hit Mendez as he left a store, police said. Mendez left but came back with a gun and allegedly shot Rutledge in the head.

"It's a senseless murder," Homicide Lt. Mel Williams said at a news conference to announce the arrest. "There's a 15-year-old out there playing, and he got shot because he inadvertently hit somebody in the face with a snowball."

Mendez was arrested about a mile from the scene of the shooting.

Therefore it's not that I wish anything bad would happen when it comes to guns, chances are it will happen. Guns are used for one purpose, one reason only (TO KILL!) And not just the innocent victims fall short, but victims families as they are the ones who has to buried their loves ones and live with the grief forever. BTW I wish no harm to any man... but I take it you are for guns?

Almost. That’s a VERY important word TMZ and it is one that should have been in your headline. Yellow journalism (and I use that word lightly) at it’s finest. You guys trying to outdo the National Enquirer on the sensationalize stupidity scale?

At least one gun can be found is 42 million homes across America. If just owning a gun was the problem then obviously there would be a lot more dead people laying around. It is not the gun but the psycho (who would find a way to injure or kill whether he had a gun or not) that is the problem.

But if we’re going to totally over-react to a gun that happens to be the same make as one used to shoot a Congresswoman then let’s not stop with Glocks. Ban all muzzle-loading derringers NOW. After all that’s what Booth used to kill Lincoln.

BTW, the next time I find a rattler or copperhead out on the horse property I'll give you a call and you can come beat it to death with a stick. I promise to keep the motor on the truck running so we can get you to the hospital in a hurry. Maybe we need to ban snakes while we're at it. They kill people, too.

Did anyone even mention the shooter was a left-wing radical? She was shot by her one of her own party members.

Yet another example of the absolute lack of cognitive process in the minds of liberal idiots...First of all, I DO NOT OWN A GUN and probably never will. I AM NOT CONSERVATIVE NOR RELIGIOUS...However, I am sick of the liberal attachment to issues when they don't even know why or how they are emotional attached to one side or another to begin with...It's like this, "Yeaaaaa, I'm a liberal, which means I love peace and harmony and guns are BAD!! Do some more drugs!!! Speaking of which, DRUGS ARE ILLEGAL and look at the mess as a result, now idiots want to make guns illegal??? FACT: MORE PEOPLE WILL BE KILLED BY GUNS IF THEY WERE ILLEGAL THAN IF THEY WERE LEGAL, PERIOD, COMMON SENSE...END OF STORY...IF YOU NEED TO ASK ME WHY, PLEASE REVERT TO MY FIRST SENTENCE...If you think guns are the problem, YOU, my friend, are the problem.

This is a another attack from the liberal media. If you were to remember right TMZ Gabby Giffords is one of the few democrats who supported the second amendment and even owned her own guns. The gun is a common gun and if it was a different gun there would not be so much controversy but of course the liberal media will use anything.

I'm a conservative. (Meaning I support practical solutions that solve problems)

The chairman is technically right that there is nothing wrong about it. HOWEVER they should have been smart enough to recognize the potential perception issues here and raffled something else off.

The appropriate damage control now is to explain the situation, apologize if anyone was offended, express support for Gabby's family and her recovery, and donate the proceeds to a charitable organization.

Then go raffle something else. Like a flag signed by General Petreaus or something.

How absolutely morbid!! The GOP has lost any brains, and common sense it might have had at one time. I am sick to death of republican bull----. WAKE UP AMERICA AND SEE THEM FOR WHO THE REALLY ARE.

TMZ was AMAZINGLY COMPLETELY SILENT the other day when Obama's Illegal Alien Uncle was busted for DUI, held by immigration, and told the cops he wanted to "call the White House" for his one phone call, yet they JUMP ALL OVER any opportunity to bash Republicans.
